The best time to travel is March/April - October/November. The winters are colder in the South Island but rarely gets below 10C (during the day)It can get frosty at night. The summer is generally about 27C but can get up to 35C. Even in the summer you can still get cold snaps so best to pack for both mild and cooler weather.

New Zealand being an island, it tends to rain a little at unexpected times, so always have a raincoat handy. During the spring, temperatures can be tricky, especially on the Bay of Islands. It's also particularly windy, especially in Wellington and on water, so an extra layer would be useful as well. In spring time, use ISO 400 film. That way you'll get sharper colors for outdoor shots, as the sky tends to be cloudy at that time of year.

bring a backpack, or two. You will at least need a small one for day hikes. Most of NZ travel is hiking and the great outdoors . Hiking Boots/Shoes, WATERPROOF!!! Weather changes quickly, and you can buy some good merino wool underwear that will cover many of your needs there. Expensive though. Get bug spray! Not necessary to pack it, but you will need it as soon as you get there if you plan to go into the wildlife at all. a hikling tent and sleeping bag is a must. There are so many impromptu places you might want to setup a tent, you should have one ready.

Any travel in NZ: bring something that keeps the sandflies away and sun protection. These two are pretty crucial for a pleasant stay in NZ!
