Mai Thai: A Taste of Siam in Auckland

by nayameie

If you love Thai food like I do, then Mai Thai is the place for you. It was voted Best Thai food in Auckland 2005 and received the Thai Select award in 2004. I had larb gai (spicy minced chicken) and tod mun (fish cakes with cucumber sauce - very yummy), which are two of my favorite Thai specialties. And to drink, you can't have Thai food without Thai Iced Tea!

Orbit: Auckland's Only Revolving Restaurant

by nayameie

Orbit is located in Sky Tower and is on a revolving platform so during your meal the restaurant revolves 360 degrees in one hour, giving you an amazing, changing view of Auckland over the course of your meal. Reservations are required for dinner (not sure about lunch). We had the venison and New Zealand lamb, both of which were delicious. For dessert we had the trio of New Zealand ice cream which was also delicious. Unfortunately I don't recall what the prices were.

Wellington: One Red Dog

by fishandchips

One Red Dog is listed as a pizza restaurant and it, in my experience, delivers some of the best. Located off Wellington's Courtenay Place in Blair St, ORD is very popular so get there early. There are tables in prime locations by the window and many others dotted around catering for different group sizes.Another feature of ORD is its home brewed beers. They allow you to do a tasting to see which one you like best then it's "2nd star to the right and straight on 'til morning......"Being right by Courtenay Place you are close to the action if you decide that you want to kick on and go to some clubs etc. The pizza is why you come here. There are heaps of variations with a medium size at $18 and large at $26. You can go half & half if you and your partner are not sure which one to settle on. Have at look at their Menu for all of the options.

Mapua Smoke House: Smokin!

by booloukas

Located about 30 min drive from Nelson, we stopped here by chance, really lovely cafe/deli.Specialise in smoked fish and procducts, we ate on balcony/terrace overlooking Waimea inlet, on the wharf. Food outstanding, lovely wine, very near to some outstanding vineyards and lovely relaxed atmosphere. We took my mum in law and ended up ordering 4 starters as couldnt decide, scallops, smoked cod and green pea puree, hot smoked salmon. This place is excellent.

Boat Shed Café: Nelson’s best seafood restaurant!

by coolmum

The Boat Shed serves the best of New Zealand seafood in a busy cafe style atmosphere - it is truly a Nelson Icon - a focal point for locals and a 'must do' for tourists. The Boat Shed is situated over the water, in an unbeatable Location. We were fortunate to be led to a table by the window (with no reservations!). Fortunate because the restaurant is often fully booked in the weekends! It was a very nice meal. We whet our appetites with seafood chowder and scallops with chilli sauce. Alex’s main course was the rump of lamb and me, steak and scampi. It was certainly one of the best dinners we had! The meats were seared just right and the seafood were fresh and delicious on its own, without the need of any dressings. It didn’t surprised us why The Boatshed is Nelson’s favourite! Food is reasonably priced and the ambience is relaxed, cosy and lively! With great food, great service and great...

Auckland: GPK

by fishandchips

GPK or gourmet pizza kitchen is a very good spot for a bite to eat when in Auckland. Situated on Ponsonby Road with many other restaurants and coffee houses GPK is my place of choice. They don't take bookings for small parties and the place is always busy. Last time we came here the food was good as usual with children well-catered for (5 choices of main and 2 choices of dessert). For mains the venison was very good and the pizza was excellent. The prices are above average (main is approx $27 and pizza is approx $22) and you get a satisfying meal and good service. A feature here is also the wine list which is excellent with lots of interesting wines by the glass. If you are interested have a look at their Menu for a full list of prices as well as the wine list.

Pedro's: Spanish Cuisine

by fishandchips

Pedro's has been creating great food in Christchurch for many years. Based upstairs on an corner of Worcester & Manchester St's Pedro's is almost in the middle of Christchurch. The room is large with several different sized tables. The menu changes regularly with the only certainty the shoulder of baby lamb. The main courses are all the same price (approx $30) so your choice will only be influenced by your taste buds. The wine list is quite good though you can bring your own wine if you wish. Corkage is a hefty $7 each so not cheap but it does allow you to bring a couple of bottles of your own wine and not pay restaurant prices. The atmosphere is about right (from my experiences in Madrid & Barcelona) and the waiting staff all Spanish. Pedro's signature dish is the shoulder of baby lamb and it's my favourite. It is a very large dish and comes with veges. It is very tender and very tasty....

Rocco's: Italian Fare

by fishandchips

I have been here several times over severalyears and it's still a great place to go. The menu features crayfish with the usual assortment of Italian dishes plus a few local items. The website has a menu on it so you can have a bit of a look. There is a good wine list so you can match your dish with a nice local wine. For seafood try the Astrolabe Sauvignon Blanc which is one of the best from the region.

Mussel Brothers Kaikoura: Don't Miss the Fresh Mussels

by fishandchips

One of a chain of mussel places with another place in the huge town of Havelock (okay so it's a tiny town) in Marlborough and Paraparaumu north of Wellington. The mussels are very very good and worth a look if you have any fondness for mussels. You can get the mussels in a variety of styles but I believe that the more simple the better - a look at the main photo for this tip is the way to do them!! Mussels, mussels & more mussels

My favourite eating places: Many Places to Choose from

There are heaps of great eating places in NZ if you know where to look. The following list are some of my favourites.Auckland - GPK in Ponsonby Rd - PizzaWellington - One Red Dog - Pizza & home brewed beer. Neo's - Breakfast and possibly the best coffee in the countryBlenheim - Roco's - really good menu and great wine selectionKaikoura - Mussel BrothersChristchurch - Pedro's - Spanish theme with Shoulder of Lamb the signature dish, New Yorker - some of the best steak in the countryQueenstown - Lone Star - huge meals
