Crab Farm Winery: Delightful food and atmosphere

by tissie

The main thing is the wine of course, which you can sample and enjoy and discuss with its maker, Hamish Jardine. The wines are wonderful. What we enjoyed the most was the whole laidback ambience of the place and the wonderful, homecooked food. We sat upstairs, on a raised terrace overlooking the vineyards, sheltered from the sun and feeling like we hadn't a care in the world - which we hadn't! Everything we had was wonderful. The lemon verbena tea was served in a pistachio coloured and glass tea pot and made with a generous sprig of lemon verbena, freshly picked from the garden. Delicious.

The Landing Cafe, Lake Tarawera: Meals with a View

by tissie

This is a lovely cafe/restaurant on the shore of Lake Tarawera outside Rotorua. The setting is peaceful with views across the lake from the terrace and there are tables inside too. We sat in the shade on the terrace, with the sun shining on the lake and watched the black swans swimming in water so clear you could see their feet. This is a very relaxed place, don't expect fast food. We ate lunch, red snapper for my beloved, fresh and beautifully cooked, I had a tart of pinenuts, spinach and cheeses - to die for. The creme brulee was one of the best I've tasted. They also do great breakfasts and afternoon teas.

Cobb & Co in Wakatu Hotel Nelson: Best prawns ever!

by regien

We arrived after 21 pm in our hotel in Nelson so most restaurants were allready closed. We decided to stay in for diner and that was the best choice ever! The food was superb! Especially when you like prawns and garlic! Prawn Feast! A plate overloaded with lots of prawns in a sauce of sweet chilie and garlic. (The people who didn't eat this dish, weren't that happy with us the next day, but don't let that scare you from taking this divine meal! haha)The next day most of my fellow travellers and I choose this dish again, because it is so amazingly good!

Muffin Break: Good breakfast!

by regien

In Auckland we had breakfast at a Muffin Break. Not only muffins, allthough they were great and there's so much choice! But they also have a lot of sandwiches with cheese, egg, bacon, tomato. And they serve fresh orange juice. Muffins and sandwiches.

Hilsops and the Craypot: Kaikoura = Eat Seafood!

by AKtravelers

As you will no doubtedly hear many times while you're in kaikoura, the town's name comes from the Maori for "Eat Seafood". It's not clear to us if the Moari is in the imperative, but we took it as a command and did as they told us. We ate at two very good restaurants: The Craypot and Hislops Cafe. The Craypot, on the main coastal road in the heart of town across from the pay parking lot, had excellent seafood. we ate dnner there and enjoyed our entrees and the long wine list. While we could have eaten on the patio, the cool evening air pushed us indoors where we enjoyed the warm atmosphere. Hislops was on the beach road north of town, across from the Holiday 10 Campground. We ate lunch there, enjoying their mostly organic menu and great espresso drinks. If you're a vegetarian, vegan or even allergic to nuts, they have little symbols on the menu to guide you to appropriate choices. Though...

The Bach: A Top Ten Restaurant in New Zealand

by AKtravelers

Our B&B owners in Taupo recommended the Bach, a lakefront restaurant with views of Tongariro, as one of the top ten restaurants in New Zealand. Apparently some publication is out to name the best restaurant in the country and Taupo's very own The Bach (pronounced like "Batch" not like the composer) is in the finals. with a recommendation like that, we had to try it and it was our best meal in New Zealand. Andrea had the red snapper and I had the best venecin in my life. We had great wine and fabulous desserts, though we probably could have had even better wine if we were interested in paying $600 a bottle! It was also our most expensive meal in New Zealand, withthe final bill somewhere around $175 for both of us. But it was definitely worth it! Even though Taupo is the trout capital of New Zealand, it is illegal to serbe trout in restaurants or sell it in stores. You have to catch it...

Bowman's Restaurant: A great Meal

by petdec

Bowman's is quite wonderful. Friends took us there for dinner as a farewell on our last night. The service is great, the food marvellous. If you have read my other tips you will know ,I love fine food and wine. The seafood is extraordinary as is their steak. The dessert was perfection. I had creme brulee, one of my favorites. Their wine list is also very fine Everything I ate was beautifully prepared and cooked to perfection. We had a de-gustation menu and the wines were absolutely perfect

Wildfire: "First Churrascaria in New Zealand"

by LBKesner

A cozy, warm, slightly loud atmosphere is created by the open kitchen with fire grill. Gnocchi--potato dumplings with diced beef ragu, white wine, tomato, and parmesan. Garlic-Lime Chicken--Frango Estilo Gaucho, young chicken marinated overnight in Latin spices, then spit-roasted "Gaucho" style; potato mash, tomato-capsicum salsaCaipirinha--cachaca, sugar, and fresh lime

Rock Salt: Exxcellent food and service!

by worldkiwi

Simply mouthwatering food. It's a little on the pricey side of the scale, but you get served a piece of culinary art! The Fish'n'chips may be the 'cheapest' on the menu at about NZ$19.50, but it is worth every cent - it's not your ordinary old fish'n'chips! My last visit here was made even more memorable by the waitress who was the best I've ever seen in a New Zealand restaurant! She dealt with a huge group faultlessly. Eye Fillet Steak topped with oysters.
