Kathmandu (and similar brands): There are always sales for outdoor clothes

by Kakapo2

If you spend some time in the main centres and bigger town you will soon get aware that there is always a sale to get the costumers' money out of their pockets. The high-price outdoor brands make no exception, and if you are lucky you can get great clothes and outdoor camping or tramping gear for little money. In fact, it would be crazy to buy the things at their regular price. Kathmandu has several sales every year which go on for weeks. The prices are DRAMATICALLY reduced during the sales. You get a fleece shirt for NZ$ 70 instead of 170, shoes for 70 instead of 200 and more, fleece jackets for even less, tents and backpacks at half-price, and so on. And although the reductions are so huge the Kathmandu founder, Jan Cameron, has become one of the richest women in New Zealand.Just have a look around. If you are not fixated on a certain brand buy your stuff somewhere else, like Snowgum or...

Jade Boulder Gallery: Jade on the west coast of the South Island

by easterntrekker

If you're on the west coast and in the market for some jade this is a wonderful place. They have a really good selection . They have some interesting information about New Zealand jade or Greenstone as they call it. There are some original works here by Ian Boustridge, one of the countries best sculptures. The prices vary from $15.00 for little earrings up to the thousand for some sculptures .

Annah S: Beautiful Design

by tissie

Annah Stretton is a leading NZ designer and has shops across the country. I visited branches of Annah S. in Pukekohe (quite a small shop) and in Whangamata (bigger shop where there was a great sale on).Beautiful windows and display models draw you in. Non-stuffy assistants leave you alone or help you, whatever you want to do, it's a great experience.Annah's clothes are very unusual but also very wearable, lots of layers of netting, lots of embellishments, rough edges, great fabrics when I was there last.Annah StrettonAUCKLAND: Broadway Newmarket, Hurstmere Road Takapuna, HAMILTON: Cassabella Lane Barton Street, WELLINGTON: Willis Street, CHRISTCHURCH: Cashel Mall, DUNEDIN: George Street, QUEENSTOWN: Rees Street.Annah.SWHANGAREI, AUCKLAND: Pukekohe, WHITIANGA, WHANGAMATA, Mount Maunganui, TAURANGA, HAMILTON: Westfield’s Shoppingtown Chartwell, Morrinsville: (outlet store), Cambridge,...

The Warehouse: Where Everyone Gets a Bargain

by tissie

It's not special so much as ghastly but it's great for cheap stuff! You will find clothing stacked high, shoes, toys and games, kitchen and houseware, stuff, stuff and more stuff. Please be aware that there is a backlash against the Warehouse as small businesses lose out to the giant and have to close down. Sounds familiar? Cheap holiday T-shirts, sunhats and flip-flops. A few $

East Cape Manuka Oil: Wonder Oil

by tissie

East Cape Manuka is a "co-operative" providing work and opportunities for local people in this poor area of New Zealand. The Visitor Centre has good parking (room for motorhomes and buses), good toilets, an excellent cafe where you can sample manuka honeys and enjoy great coffee, tea, smoothies and ice creams. There are visual displays and sales of manuka products. The oil is distilled on site but it is not usually possible to look around the works because of the dangers of machinery and vehicles. When I visited I had an insect bite on my arm that had swollen to massive proportions. It was suggested that I put some of the tester bottle of strong manuka oil on it - by the time I'd enjoyed a cup of manuka tea and a to die for mango ice cream the swelling had reduced to almost normal size and the itchy had disappeared - that was evidence enough for me to buy a bottle of the oil which served...

shop of the Tairawhiti Museum: a Maori bag

by vtveen

It is not the shop, but more or less the kind of gifts, which are special. We saw a lot of New Zealand's women wearing bags of woven flax. They are called 'kete' after a Maori name. It means 'basket'. Maori people used the kete for carrying their food, belongings and treasures.Kete's now are in all forms and colours. Specially along the east coast of the North Island - between Napier and Gisborne - we found very professional and beautiful examples. There are a lot of small shops and galleries selling kete's. One of them with some very nice examples was the shop of the Tairawhiti Museum in Gisborne. depends on the size, but will be from around NZD 50,-

The Jade Boulder Gallery: Greenstone from New Zealand

by vtveen

Greenstone or Jade is one of the gems of New Zealand. It is found on the South Island in the area around Hokitika and Greymouth. Off course you can buy your jade gift everywhere in the country, but we found it appropriate to do it on the South Island. The Jade Boulder Gallery in Greymouth is a very special and unique shop for designed jade sculptures and jewellery. To understand more of the New Zealand greenstone they do have in the shop a so called 'Discovery Walkway'. Jade jewellery

Gift Shop White Island Tours: The smell of New Zealand

by vtveen

Specially in the geo thermal areas of New Zealand people always smell the particular 'perfume' of sulphur. We found it a good idea to bring this smell to our friends in the Netherlands and decided to buy pieces of sulphur soap for them. The shop belongs to White Island Tours and is almost the only possibility for buying gifts of White Island. Most typical is off course a piece of Volcanic Sulphur Soap, so our friends can also smell 'New Zealand' for a long long time.
