Mobile Phone

by halans

If you have a GSM mobile phone, you can use it in NZ too. For local calls (like confirming your excursion bookings, etc...), you could buy a prepay connection pack from Telecom NZ or Vodaphone. A Vodaphone starter pack (with your own number) is NZ$ 35, pre-loaded with (a miserable) $5. You can add a $20 pre-pay recharge to get around. You could use roaming with your current home account, but that would be ridiculously expensive (I guess).

Internet connection

by halans

If you drag your laptop with you, get a SNAP dial-up internet connection from a local PC store. For 20 NZ$ you get 28 days access through nationwide 'freephone' numbers. Some hotels might charge you a connection fee though. If youýre staying in B&B you might not always have a phoneline in the room to use, as we experienced. But remember, you're on a holiday! Don't spend too much time on the pc!

Victoria Park Market - Auckland

by keeweechic

Victoria Park Market is on the site of an old rubbish destructor built in 1905. There's plenty of the shops at the market both of the tourist, craft and artwork type as well as shoe shops, homemade candy etc. There are 3 licensed restaurants, a food court and small 'nibble' cafes. The shopping centre overlooks Victoria Park and is within reasonable walking distance from the city centre. On a ramp leading to an upper level there is a 'small' The Celebrity 'Walk of Fame'. On the weekends there is live entertainmentSome of the goods here are not sold anywhere else which makes shopping here quite unique.Open 7 days a week from 9am to 6 pm.

Alcohol

by dragontml

Most night-spots, restaurants and cafes serve liquor seven days a week. You can purchase alcohol from liquor outlets (beer, wine and spirits) and supermarkets (beer and wine only) seven days a week. Legally you must be 18 years old to buy alcohol or consume it in a public place, and you may be asked for a photo-ID.

Various: Vegemite

by kiwi

Supermarket. If you want to try something very much a part of New Zealand life, then buy some Vegemite. Originally from Australia, we have embraced it as part of us too. However it is very strong, salty and a bit repulsive to visitors. Vegemite is a Yeast extract, and should be use in small quatities due to its concentration. We eat it normally at breakfast, but anytime is ok. You can spread it on hot buttered toast, and with tomato or avacado sliced on top is nice also. With crackers and cheese. Or you can add a spoon or two to meat when cooking, even spread it on steaks or roasts before cooking.Vegemite is a very high in Vitamin B and has often been in stories of mountaineers or trekkers lost and surviving on this stuff. It is known to be suitable for vegetarians. You don't need to buy a jar or a tube, if you stay at a motel often there are little cubes of the stuff in the breakfast bar...

Duty Free Shopping at the Airport: Auckland International Airport

by kiwi

There is an interesting and convenient tip to give you about Auckland International Airport. It is possible to buy DutyFree goods on entry to NZ, avoiding the hassle of carrying them on the aircraft after purchase at your departure location. The prices are very compatible and more especially, liquour is cheaper than anywhere else I’ve seen. If you purchase from either Regency Duty Free or DFS Duty Free, then you get to fast track through customs IF you are a New Zealand Passport holder. This is a great facility. Sorry we don’t offer this for international guests to our country. Liquour, perfumes, electrical goods, etc

Icebreaker Merino Outdoor Clothing: Expensive but oh so addictive

by tomatohead

Icebreaker woolens are oh so dear on the wallet. I NEVER EVER thought I'd shell out $100 USD on a shirt, but man oh man, are they worth it!Consider them investment pieces you can work, play, and travel in. Matt wore his tee three days in a row (installed a dishwasher on a hot day in day one, went rock climbing in day two, and went to work in day three), and wasn't even whiffy! They are great for hot and cold climates. You don't feel like you're wearing a nasty plastic bag in your Icebreaker. I ski in mine all the time and have taken it to Hawaii, where it dries overnight. The zip necks with their sexy thumb loop shirts are fun. The hand washable felted jackets are so practical AND stylin'.The Superfine line is very edgy and urban. A LOT. Shirts go for @$40-$100 USD!

Many roadside stalls: Fresh Fruit from a Road Side Stall

by tomatohead

You are zipping along at breakneck speed and you are craving a lucious Omega plum....what's a traveler to do? Slow down and stop at the nearest roadside fruit stall- hopefully one with an "honesty box."Some of the stalls are unmanned, you take what you want and leave your payment behind. Omega PlumsGrapesYum! A couple dollars Kiwi.

various souvenir shops: Souvenirs

by Kate-Me

Great items to shop for in New Zealand include woollen products, stuffed toys such as Kiwis are very common and come in all sizes (my little brother used to have a whole family of them!) and I particularly like all their Paua Shell jewellery and other items such as bowls, clocks, ornaments, trinket boxes and more.

$2 Shop: $2 for anything in the shop

by rozehill

In these shop they sell just about anything, the stock is changing constantly, sells out quickly and everytime you go in there is new stock...lots of novelties A shop which is a treasure trove with every item within your price rangeThat simple, but highly successful, philosophy underpins the attraction of the $2 Shop.New Zealander Brian Salmon came up with the concept of a shop where a $2 coin could buy anything in-store.In December 1994 the first franchised $2 Shop opened in Palmerston North and now the shops are spreading all over the country. $2
