There's not a lot to do in Akaroa once the sun goes down. Dinner will take you a little while, and you can call in at the pub for a drink , but you might think that's about it. If all the fresh air and the day's activities haven't left you wanting simply to flop, you could check out the cinema. New Zealand has some great and quirky little cinemas, and the new one at Akaroa is well deserving of a place on the list. State of the art projection and sound, wonderfully luxurious seating, up to date and varied programming and a smart little cafe have created a superb new night-time venue for the town.
The autumn special of soup and dessert for supper plus a movie ticket, all for just $20, was a winner.
There are two screens and six or seven films to choose from through the day's sessions - and, no - they don't show Lord of the Rings, Narnia and The World's Fastest Indian on a loop! though they do make a feature of including up-to-date releases of French films in the programme.
Lovely friendly pub for the locals ( aka local watering hole) or the traveller, also has a TAB here..........totalisator agency board.
This is very much the New Zealand two-storeyed wooden hotel building, complete with characteristic balcony.
