for all kind's of watersport, sailing and windsurfing is allowed, but no boats with a motor, the habitat is to fragil for that. the Jetty is in winter often crowded with birds, taking a deserved sunbath after a cold nite
its a quiet place during the week, the walkways often deserted a spot to relax and for Birdwatching, don't forget your binoculos.
a 2.5km walkway along the Avon and you find yourself amongs Christchurch's Birdlife.
the Estuary a wonderful recreational spot.
watersport is possible, ballgames, tree climbing or just having a picnic.
the birds are protected and also know how to look after themselfs
Herons, Spoonbills, Kingfisher amongst Terns, Seagulls, Stilts, Black Swans, the old Shags all feeding peaceful together.
around 4km from home, the Bottlelake Forest is the ideal place to walk Rosie on hot summers day. an artifical Forest of huge Pine tree's, supplying the local Building industry. but it is also a very importand recreational patch for Mountainbiking, Horseriding and walkers, with separate tracks for each sport. when you have the stamina to walk through the forest, you will meet the ocean at Waimari Beach, takes around 1 1/2hours and is fun.
just 3min. from my place I took this gorgeous shot from the snowy Port Hills, Aug. 2004, not every year winter has this effect on Christchurch, so I thought I better get my camera out.
I had just a window of 15 min of good light, I could see the black clouds moving fast over the Hills. well I made it. in the foreground are the occidation ponds of CHCH, looks like a wee lake doesn't it....and 2 years ago, 2 japanese tourist took a swim on a hot summers day. they had to be ask ...politly, as we are, to come out of there.
so be warned, no swim in the ponds
there is Flora and Fauna in abundance here, Birds singing, Broom flowering, later the mushrooms will popp up, all in all a fine day out. bring a picnic, get some info at the Info center right at the entrance of the Forest, an orientations speadsheet will be handed out and of you go... I can assure you you will have an enjoyable walk!!
a 20 min. walk along the Avon to New Brighton Beach, Rosie and I did it countless times, now, I have to walk it without her
the picture was taken on the day I took Rosie for the last time to her beloved beach
