Wobbly Kea Restaurant: Don't Let the Kea Eat your Lunch!

by ATXtraveler Written Mar 2, 2008

If you want to get a hot lunch on your trip out to Arthur's Pass, then you will likely want to stop in at the Wobbly Kea in the middle of the village. There are only two or three choices in town, but this one seemed spacious enough to hold us for a few minutes as we sat down and stayed warm with a cup of coffee. Due to the slightly cool time of year that we enjoyed, I chose to have just a bowl of tomato soup, which was definitely hearty. I think the rest of the team had sandwiches, and they all made it.

    The Wobbly Kea: Cosy lunches

by allikat Updated Jul 17, 2006

Slap bang in the middle of Arthurs Pass village, the Wobbly Kea cafe serves cosy meals and great coffee in a comfortable atmosphere. The walls are hung with local artwork and it is one of those places you feel good about being inside when the weather outside is cold, wet and wintery. A great place, I enjoyed our long, lazy Sunday lunch here.

AS well as lunch, we paid $15NZ for a panorama print of the Arthurs Pass area, an aerial shot of the mountain range covered in snow with the river and mountain pass winding through. Well worth picking one up here.

Favorite Dish: Those of you with a voracious appetite might want to go for the huge steak, chunky fries and salad (to be fair, the salad was average). If you're in the mood for soup, the tomato soup was thick, rich and tasty. Traditonalists opting for the fish 'n' chips won't be disappointed.

    The Wobbly Kea: Wobbly Kea

Across from the General Store is a sign that says 'Oscar's Haus'. It is the home of the Wobbly Kea Cafe and Bar. Oscar Coberger was one of the original settlers to the area and made his name as a mountian guide. The name caught my eye as I have a Burmese cat called Oscar. For more about Oscar click on the history link on the website below.

Favorite Dish: We only stopped for coffee and a scone but there is a quite generous menu and the prices are OK considering the distance from a main town. The scones were delicious.

best Pies between Canterbury and Westland and best Icecream....Deep South, from Inverargill
you can eat in the Cafe or outside under the Canvas, its fun watching the lokals and travellers dropping in, the Staff is quite something, all have great communication skills,...meaning, they are chatty ^..^
but they know everything in and around the National Park, when to drive on and when its better to wait a little. weather is realy moody here.

Favorite Dish: vegetarien Pie and Deep South Icecream, yes the Cappuccino is great too, all that for around US$ 4.-
