the Town is packed with Art Deco Buildings..restored and wonderfully presented with a very nice colour-shemeand some are right into your face ^..^ when I first visited Ashburton in the late 80s, it was a little grey, even dull place. is full of ....everything, on every corner you get a coffee, scones, muffins, pasta, not to forget good seafood, ..vegetarien..I realy was surprised about that . country, cattle, mutton and what have you.but no, vegetarien is definitly on the menu.nobody gets hungry in Ashburton and from US$ 10.- dirt cheapmore
till a couple of years ago, we had the choice of travelling by Train...the Southerner...from Christchurch to Dunedin, stopover in Ashburton. that has been shutt down. except for the freight trains..the rails run straight through the town.
by car or bus, I think twice a day, is the only choice from Christchurch, a short hour on the State Highway 1 a straight drive of 65km
I ad one of these old Morris Minor 1954 coupe here in Ashburton, all original part and working well...very well looked after.

from Christchurch on the way south on State Highway 1, driving into Ashburton..the Glock Tower..the Bell can be heard at every full hour..nothing sleepy here

Fondest memory: it's a smallish Town population of around 15 000, all friendly and all communicative. the Main attraction is the Ashburton Domain.....used for Sports events and regreational acctivitaties. I discribed the Domain in my intro....
