This restaurant is so popular we called twice and couldn't get a table. Our local friend told us you normally need to book a week out to get a table on a Friday or Saturday night. Finally we got one so it pays to book. The food of Burma is one of the least known types of Asian food which is a pity as it's full of flavour and very healthy.
The restaurant was full and we got the last table at 9pm on a Saturday night. The way to eat this food is to order 2 dishes per person as they are entree size. We ordered 3 to share between the 2 of us. All dishes were delicious. I recommend you order the lamb skewers, the beef curry and the stir fried squid. Each dish is about $11.00 each and you get a complimentary jug of iced water with lemon.
Favorite Dish: All dishes are great, the menu isn't huge but that's fine. For example the curry is available in the same flavour, just choose between chicken, beef or lamb. Easy!

The Bodhi Tree is said to be the only Burmese restaurant in New Zealand. If this is true or not - I do not mind as the food is as delicious as I have experienced it on several occasions.
The way of dining is already totally different from other - not only Asian - restaurants. All dishes come in entree portions, so you have to order several ones to get satisfied, and this offers the opportunity to sample the most differently flavoured dishes - which is absolutely fabulous if you are are group of 3 or 4 or 5... You can share and test many distinctive dishes. It is a little bit like having tapas in Spain - a little bit of everything, and everything totally different.
The dishes are not just sweet and/or sour or spicy or curried. The herbs and spices are used in a much more subtle way which is clearly the haute cuisine of Asian cooking. Some dishes taste more familiar, others totally exotic, especially when ingredients such as lemongrass are used. Very surprising dishes are also on offer, like tea leaf salad and tamarind sorbet with chilli.
The service is super friendly and helpful. As the restaurant has become very popular booking is highly recommended.
Favorite Dish: I love the fish dishes and the chilli squid.
