Wooded Avenues and Alleyways
Favorite thing: Hanmer is an alpine village with a forest on its doorstep. There are lots of trails, tracks and walkways to go exploring with many of the 'roads' wooded tracks. Some very beautiful places to walk and explore!!
Natural Fuels and the Gasometer
Favorite thing: I must say that in my experience, even in the technical professions, I had never heard of a Gasometer. But I can't say that any longer.
A gasometer is a storage tank for natural gas. Tapping into the natural ground fuels that surround the springs, the ground pressure helps force the flow into the resevoir. There is a floating steel cover with counterweights allowing the levels to be controlled and monitored.
The town's cooking, heating and lamp oils were supplied through the gasometer from 1897 until 1940 when the town was connected to the national grid.
This gasometer is located inside the Spa at Hanmer Springs.
Favorite thing: Since 1859 the thermal springs of Hanmer Springs have been attracting visitors for their therapeutic and relaxing benefits. Located a 90 minute drive north of Christchurch, in naturally landscaped grounds, the mineral springs contain sodium chloride, bicarbonates and small amounts of boron, calcium and carbonate.
They can be beneficial in the treatment of orthopaedic conditions such as bone fractures and soft tissue injuries. The water is regularly tested, but bathers are advised not to put their heads underwater.
Facilities at the Hanmer Springs Thermal Reserve include waterslides,
freshwater heated pools,
Four private thermal suites
Private sauna and steam suites with shower, changing area and freshwater plunge pools.
