Hanmer Springs Things to Do

  • Go for a walk

Hanmer has a wealth of tracks to go for a walk and enjoy the local flora & fauna. Most are located on the north side of Hanmer with some steep paths up Conical Hill. You can purchase a map of the local tracks from the information centre located beside the Hot Pools so you'll be sure to know where to go (and hopefully where you are when you get...

  • Hanmer Spa

You can get some well earned (if you've had an active holiday!) pampering at the Hanmer Spa. It's in the same complex as the Hot Pools and is accessed through a separate entrance to the left of the Hot Pools. The Spa has plenty of treatments for tired and weary bodies and skin with prices about average - so Angie tells me! If you get on their...

  • Queen Mary Hospital

Queen Mary started life as a recovery place for invalids back in the late 1890's. People went there to 'take the waters' of Hanmer springs found a few years earlier. The hospital went through several iterations as a place for recovery before it became the main place for the treatment of alcoholics in the 1940's. This was extended to include drug,...

From Hanmer Springs we headed to Kaikoura taking the inland scenic route. It took us past the entrance to the ski village of Mount Lyford and through Waiau. The scenery once again is fantastic, so if you have to choose a route, don't be afraid of choosing this one!Make sure you have enough fuel, as there isn't much in the way of "life" of this...

We came across these beautiful springs in Lewis Pass, and decided to stay the night here in our camper van!The Hot Springs are totally natural but colour, temperature and flow rate can vary from day to day, and is dependant on the weather patterns and variation is especially noticable after heavy rain, snow or drought. Set beside the Maruia River,...

  • Lewis River

Lewis River runs through the Lewis Pass National Reserve and feeds into the Waiau River. It is most commonly visited for its natural hot springs, the Sylvia Flats. 3 natural hot springs located just of the banks of the river. Definitly a off the beaten path location. For access to the river coming from Hamner Springs, simply take the first left...

  • Hanmer Springs Thermal Reserve

Hanmer Springs Thermal Reserve is the wrong reason to visit Hanmer Springs, but there are so many reasons that are right.I admit it was pretty bad ass at first to be chillin in the natural hot springs. But soon realized that it was the beauty of the surroundings that made the experience specail. In the end i wouldnt have noticed a difference if i...

  • Waiau Ferry Bridge

You couldnt ask for a grander entrance into Hanmer Springs. The Waiau Ferry bridge spands 32 meters over the Waiau Gorge and i could swear that while we drove across it for the first time, i heard it scream "Welcome to Hanmer Springs!"

  • Waiau River

The Waiau River along Lewis Pass had us stopping around every bend to get another look at it. We seriously could have pitched a tent along its banks and stayed there forever. There was a moment while gazing at the river that i just thought to myself "Man what i would give to be a trout right now".

  • Lewis Pass

The drive through Lewis Pass was so good and so beautiful, we just had to do it twice. I couldnt get enough of the Waiau River that hugs highway 7 as you wind your way up the pass. It seemed everywhere we looked, there was another snow capped peak to gawk at. The snow covered beech trees along the Lewis River seemed to come straight out of scenes...

  • Bungee Jumping or Jet Boating

If you want to go bungee jumping or jet boating while you're in Hanmer Springs then the place to do it is just out of town towards Christchurch. We didn't do it but we stopped to watch at the bridge for a while. We had hoped to have a go in the jet boats on the way home but we ran out of time...

Hanmer Springs Restaurants

  • The Bakery

The Bakery provide items as its name would suggest plus really good coffee using Christchurch based Vivace beans. Plenty of options ranging from pies to filled rolls and all of the sweet items you'd expect. The coffee was always nice and the spiced chai latte made with powder (not the cheap & sweet syrup!).

  • Malabar

Malabar is a posh looking place that serves up good Indian food. They have a takeaway service so if you want to save a few dollars and eat at home you can. As our holiday home was less than 200M up the road it was a perfect place to try. The service is quick and the owners very friendly. The prices are very reasonable ($12 to $14 for the meals we...

We popped in here a...

  • The Log Cabin

Not much to choose from when it comes to eating out in Hamner Springs, but out of the few places to eat, The Log Cabin definitly is a winner. It just comes down to great food at a decent price. Also while at the log cabin, checck out there collection of movies for rent on VHS. This was the second place i saw in Hanmer Springs that were renting out...

  • Lunch

We had lunch at a pub in town...it was quite expensive (as are most/all places in Hanmer Springs for food) but the food was good and we had a nice view. I had the Battered Blue Cod and it was really good! :)

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The Hanmer Village Inn is the local pub and is located in the middle of town. It's an old building that's been looking after thirsty travellors for many years. The pub doubles as a restaurant earlier in the night then, when the hour is a bit late, the tables are removed and the music comes on.

Dress Code: Anything goes here though clean and tidy is expected.

Hanmer Springs is about 1 1/2 hours drive from Christchurch, 3 1/2 hours drive from the Picton Ferry and approx 1 1/2 hours from Kaikoura. Driving from Christchurch includes some nice options for a tea break at Culverden (the Red Post), a beer at the Hurunui Tavern or a coffee break at Amberley. We drove to Hanmer Springs from Christchurch...it took around two hours to get there and we got some lovely views of Canterbury along the way. It is an easy day trip from Christchurch, although be warned that you may be a little drained/tired after being in the thermal pools... ;)

  • Try some of the amazing local wine

The owners staff the shop and add a personal touch to the whole experience.Cellar open 7 days a week, 10am - 5pm You can buy the 2009 Reisling in town but at the winery you can buy the 2010 Reisling Classic which I really recommend if you like your wine not so sweet. Hanmer Springs Sports & Outdoors

  • Hanmer Half Marathon

The Hanmer Half is a fairly hilly run that starts at the Recreation Ground and finishes at the Hanmer school. The run starts with 2km up Clarence Valley Road and then moves onto forest roads before going back onto a main road. Next are some private tracks before coming back out of the forest, over a couple of fords (ie through 2 streams), some tree...

  • Hanmer Golf Club

The par 68 course at Hanmer is on the small side but has its challenges, mostly in the first half plus a tricky par 3 17th - especially if it's windy. The course has only 1 par 5 hole.Green fees are $25 for 18 holes for adults and $15 for children plus you can hire carts if you want to drive instead of walk.

  • Hanmer 8km run

There are plenty of tracks in and around Hanmer that can be used for walking and running. A good intro to the annual Hanmer half Marathon is a run on a portion of the course. A good start point is in front of the Hot pools (get there early for a close parking spot). Run toward town and turn left into Jacks Pass Rd. Follow Jacks pass then turn right...

  • Natural Fuels and the Gasometer

I must say that in my experience, even in the technical professions, I had never heard of a Gasometer. But I can't say that any longer.A gasometer is a storage tank for natural gas. Tapping into the natural ground fuels that surround the springs, the ground pressure helps force the flow into the resevoir. There is a floating steel cover with...

  • Thermal Pools

Since 1859 the thermal springs of Hanmer Springs have been attracting visitors for their therapeutic and relaxing benefits.
