This annual event will be run on 18 November this year. The course is south of Kaikoura and accessed from State highway 1 before the Hunderlees.
The full distance of the Kaikoura Coast Track is 43km with the Crayfish Trail being 25km of this. The run starts at Ngaroma and finishes at the Staging Post. The course is varied in its terrain including a stretch along the black sands of the southern coastline and a climb to a height of 642m.
Current cost is $45.00 which includes the track user fee.
You can also check out the main track at Kaikoura Track.
Equipment: As you will see from the website competitors have to carry polypropylene or equivalent top, hat and gloves, windproof jacket and survival blanket. You will also need your normal running gear.
There are boat trips which go out to take you to see seabirds (not sure if it's a colony on an island or just a group of them).
But, even without taking one of these trips, we saw plenty of birds, so you can just go down to the pier and watch them, or down at the seals from the rocks you can see gulls, mollyhawks, small darting birds, and some kind of stilt - an unusual black and white water bird about half the size of a magpie (or less), but with a very long red beak, a bit like a knitting needle only smaller!
You can visit the office here to find out about the wildlife watching boat and helicopter trips (Warning: book well in advance, especially in summer, as they're really popular)
Equipment: All gear would be supplied for these.
fishing, surfing, all sorts of Beach activities, you name you can do it here.
Kaikoura has also a fine Hors racing track, and each year in Now. is the South Island Cup held here ..in the Trotts
Equipment: most of the equipment can be hired, and don't forget to book a trip to see the Whales
