The original New Brighton Pier was built in 1894 and stood on the same site as the present pier till 1964.

On 1 November 1997 the new pier was officially opened. The Pier and Foreshore Society raised almost $2 million from the community which was matched by a further $2 million from the Christchurch City Council.

The New Brighton Pier is a very windy place and there were strong gust of wind while we were there.

ca 100m from the Beach, these Palm's have a tough life with the easterlies, the salty air and cold, but so far they made it and getting stronger.enhancing the walk through the Mall of New Brighton...this Shopping Area is the oldest in the City, when I arrived in the 80's, shopping was a bit of an adventure over the weekend, everything was closed, except New Brighton. nowa days the Mall has been revamped, one way street, parking space...for free.
