Blue Bay Café: South Canterbury's Best Café 2008

    by Kakapo2 Updated Nov 10, 2008

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Great location above Caroline Bay.

We often stop at the Blue Bay Café in Timaru, mostly just for coffee, a cake or savoury snack from the cabinet, or a soup – and you do not get a lot more, as the menu is rather small.

The quality of the coffees and food is good – but the main reason for loving this place is its location, overlooking Caroline Bay. On a nice day you can see as far as Mt. Hutt – the view you can admire on my photo of the Timaru intro page. Sitting at one of the outside tables is great since they installed glass panels along the footpath, so you are protected from the wind.

The Blue Bay Café was named best café in South Canterbury 2008 in the Café Magazine.

You can see the café from the State Highway but it is located at the start of the low-traffic zone, named The Bay Hill. Turn off SH 1 towards the city centre (Sefton Street), and turn the next left into The Bay Hill. If you are lucky you find a carpark along the street close to the café.

    Open daily 9am – 5pm

  • Speights Ale House: Best dining in Timaru - bar none

by kiwikid Written May 20, 2006

Great food at reasonable prices in a stunning character building. The menu has something for everyone, and includes a selection of vegetarian dishes.

The staff are friendly and helpful and the servings are generous.

It's warm and cosy in the colder months. In summer the outside dining area is sheltered and sunny.

Favorite Dish: It's hard for me to go past "Blue and Gold" - fresh blue cod in a beer batter with fresh salad and fries. With a Speight Pale Ale to wash it down.
