Whitebait-A local delicacy

by amandajayne81

Whilst my Grandparents had learnt about whitebait from reading Footrot Flats comics and my Italian/Australian friend swears they sometimes get it in Sydney I had learnt about whitebait being a West Coast of NZ must try in an autobiographical book I read about 6 months before our trip. I bought my white bait sandwich having no idea what it would look like and was quite shocked when it cost over 10 NZD! It paid not to think about eating the whole fish but really it tasted fine. I don't think I would have some everyday but if someone gave me another one I would eat it without hesitation. Definitely try it.I bought mine in Haast where there were several cafes selling it.

Bra Fences

by DSwede

While the 'original' bra fence was located on a country farm fence outside of Cardrona, due to popularity and some controversy, bra fences have come and gone.Originally the landowners of the Cardrona fence line left the bras, which gained some attention by passing motorist. Controversy led to their removal, which in turn increased its public exposure. Each time the bras came back, they came in greater numbers. There are some other Bra Fences to be seen in the country side, so just keep you eyes open! For example this one pictured was on the west coast, north of Haast.

Lemon and Paroa - The local softdrink

by amandajayne81

When I lived in NZ in 1996 my host family loved this drink. At the time it didn't do much for me. Mind you I don't really like softdrink. Anyway I made my fiance sample some and I tried it again and must admit it isn't too bad. Hard to know what to compare it to really. Just try it for yourself. Available EVERYWHERE.I have attached a website that mentions the drink as well as many other Kiwi customs.
