Are you the sort of traveller that sees a road on a map and thinks - 'let's go there!' ? Well I am. I saw this road on the map when checking out the Malborough Sounds. It follows a narrow piece of land between Queen Charlotte Sound and Mahau then Kenepuru Sounds to Portage Bay and beyond.
Only 25km - shouldn't take long! It took over 1 hour! It is a very winding, hilly road that follows the shore of Mahau Sound and then Kenepuru Sound until it reaches the Portage Resort Hotel. Unfortunately on the way to Portage all the views were on the left and behind us through quite thick shrubs. But, not one to give up, we drove on until we reached the resort for a coffee.
We were rewarded with views of a beautiful cove which we admired over a coffee. The return journey was much improved as we faced the openings in the bushes and had some pleasant surprises.
By the way the resort was in receivership at the time.
from Picton to Blenheim, just a short trip and anyway on your way down south to Canterbury or Southland. stay for a while, live the good life..wine, fresh seafood, they serve Venison, Lambchopstoo..actually everything you like...you choose the wine
have a look at my separate page, you wont be disappointed ..I think. personally I love this page the most, because the Marlborough Sound are an unique part of New Zealand. tell me what you think!!
