The Clansman: The best mussels in New Zealand!
The small town of Havelock near where the Pelorus River dumps into Mahau Sound is known as the mussel capital of the world. If that is so, The Clansman must surely be the epitome of gastronomic power! For the modest amount of $36.50, my wife and I splurged on mussels prepared in a dazzling array of mouth-watering styles. This price (February 2009) also included superb cappuccinos. Service was prompt and neighbourly! The beautiful stone-studded building has an old world charm and was the perfect midway stop for lunch between Kaikoura and Kaiteriteri. An experience with large deposits in the memory bank!Hours are Mon - Sun * Breakfast 8.30am - 12 noon * Lunch 12 noon - 5.00pm * Dinner 5.00pm - Closing The Mussel Platter - outstanding!
