    Activities in the Sounds
  • Tip Rating:
  • A sound is a valley drowned by the sea - forest and water merge to create a dramatic coastal landscape.
Arrive by sea through the glorious maze of deep coves and bays of Queen Charlotte Sound. Fine restaurants and accommodation lodges beckon
Explore the town of Picton. European settlement of this area began in the 1840s and many of the early buildings still grace the waterfront
Go on a sea kayaking safari - guide yourself or join a group
Walk the Queen Charlotte Track (three - four days) - a popular walkway with many entry and exit points and numerous top class resorts and accommodation providers along its length
Visit the Edwin Fox, a maritime artefact, situated in Picton
Dive shipwrecks - the Russian cruise liner Mikhail Lermontov and the wreck of the Hippalos, a 120-year old wooden barque
Charter a sailing boat and cruise the Sounds - skippers can be hired

    Visit the Wineries
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are a huge number of wineries in Marlborough. I have assessed a few on my Blenheim page so have a look there for details on each. Alan Scott is well worth a visit for both its wine & food so maybe a good start point.

There are numerous tracks around the Marlborough area - especially around Picton & the Marlborough Sounds. The Queen Charlotte track is very popular and can be accessed via boat from Picton as your start point.

an exercise I love to watch, growing grapes thinking of wine. what a lovely drop they produce around here, white wine my favorite, Chardonnay actually. there are too many vinyards to mention, big ones, small ones..Boutique wine, costly so they are mostly exported. anyway..here is one, Oysterbay makes a great drop!

  • Tip Rating:
  • is at the head of the Pelorous Sound, a small Town but importand center for processing shellfish.Pelorous Sound is worldwide known for excellent fishing, many American Business People fly over for a week or two and going fly fishing in the clear waters of the Pelorous River.
if you an early bird, you can ask the the Launches who deliver the mail, its a day-trip with a purpose and just wonderful.
camping can be arranged or stay at the Rutherford Youth Hostel
what to see..many walks around the Town and the area, walk up the hill to the Towns Waterwork and you have a great view over the Sounds

    the good Life
  • Tip Rating:
  • the Sounds are a NZ treasure, peace and quiet, the Homesteads and Logdes often only by boat accessible.having a Family Bach here is just Paradise and mostly stay in the Family for Generations. When in the area, canoeing, boating with fishing included will be your pasttime...nothing else then Nature, Bellbirds and learning to relax again

    Collingwood to Farewell Spit

the Town on the Aorere Rivermouth used to be a shipbuilding center and mentioned first 1843. But coal mines and later the Gold rush promised more fortune, but when the rush was gone, the coal mined Collingwood settled for a quiet Township life again. Farewell Spit a windy attraction, the furthes point of the South Island. there is speculation that a road will be build to link Karamea on the West Coast, I hope not..while then the Abel Tasmans peace and quiet will be lost forever.
for now fishing, recreational and commercial are the main Moneymaker
Farewell Spit is a windy but beautiful stretch of about 40km, but it also shelters the Golden Bay area, on of the South Islands most beautiful Beaches.
an other attractions as already mentioned is the Abel Tasman and the Heaphy Track..the Guys from the Pic will bring to the foot of the Track

you can't escape it...only when you fly from the North to the South and vice versa. otherwise you have to take the Ferry from Wellington to Picton....and you are amongst it.this trip has been my first, when I arrived in NZL 1987, of course I have been back, forwards..backwards.
it was a very hot but georgous crossing through Cook Straight, right into the Marlborough Sound....have a look at my Souths Island page how calm the waters where...and so blue.
