Lake Grassmere

by pepples46

south of Blenheim on the way to Kaikoura is Lake Grassmere, NZ Salt ponds.Seawater is pumped into the main Lake and through evaporation and relentless wind salt crystal starts forming. of course the process is a little more complicated, but that's how I understood it. from the main Lake the seawater has to be pumped in smaller ponds, where the actual evaporation startsSAXA is the Saltproduct you can buy in all Supermarket in NZor the Natural Flaky Seasalt Product

Activities in the Sounds

by TomorrowsAngel

A sound is a valley drowned by the sea - forest and water merge to create a dramatic coastal landscape.Arrive by sea through the glorious maze of deep coves and bays of Queen Charlotte Sound. Fine restaurants and accommodation lodges beckon Explore the town of Picton. European settlement of this area began in the 1840s and many of the early buildings still grace the waterfront Go on a sea kayaking safari - guide yourself or join a group Walk the Queen Charlotte Track (three - four days) - a popular walkway with many entry and exit points and numerous top class resorts and accommodation providers along its length Visit the Edwin Fox, a maritime artefact, situated in Picton Dive shipwrecks - the Russian cruise liner Mikhail Lermontov and the wreck of the Hippalos, a 120-year old wooden barque Charter a sailing boat and cruise the Sounds - skippers can be hired

Collingwood

by pepples46

the Town on the Aorere Rivermouth used to be a shipbuilding center and mentioned first 1843. But coal mines and later the Gold rush promised more fortune, but when the rush was gone, the coal mined Collingwood settled for a quiet Township life again. Farewell Spit a windy attraction, the furthes point of the South Island. there is speculation that a road will be build to link Karamea on the West Coast, I hope not..while then the Abel Tasmans peace and quiet will be lost forever.for now fishing, recreational and commercial are the main MoneymakerFarewell Spit is a windy but beautiful stretch of about 40km, but it also shelters the Golden Bay area, on of the South Islands most beautiful Beaches.an other attractions as already mentioned is the Abel Tasman and the Heaphy Track..the Guys from the Pic will bring to the foot of the Track

Picton

by pepples46

Picton is a busy little Town, the South Island Terminal for the Cook Straight you have to ship in for Wellington or get off the Ferry from the North to the South. Situated at the beautiful Queen Charlott Sound, the Town enjoys a lush green from the Hills and the deep blue waters as a fine contrast. as a child I was told, green and blue colours do not combine...but Nature shows us otherwise, it goes just harmonious together, so I have became a little more confident with what I wear.you can hire boats for self-drive and enjoy your days in the Sounds, or hire a car and drive the 100km Queen Charlotte Drive to Havelock.

the good Life

by pepples46

the Sounds are a NZ treasure, peace and quiet, the Homesteads and Logdes often only by boat accessible.having a Family Bach here is just Paradise and mostly stay in the Family for Generations. When in the area, canoeing, boating with fishing included will be your pasttime...nothing else then Nature, Bellbirds and learning to relax again

Blenheim

by pepples46

the Sunshine Capital of New Zealand and famous Wine region. a busy Town, spacious with vibrant colours, but in the heat of the Summer, a uniform brown marks the region. in 1972 Blenheim had 2700 sunshine hours, the highest in the Country.

Kenepuru Sound

by didgeridorien

This sound is in the Marlborough Region. You can go across Mt Stokes to the southern edge of Kenepuru Sound. The forest there is very natural and you probably won't meet anyone.
