A great way to see the Farewell Spit (long long stretch of sand home to many species of bird) is on the back of a horse.
I chose Cape Farewell Horse Treks. I did a 1.5km trek (Pillar Point Light) for around $40. Pillar Point was a radar station built in World War 2. From Pillar Point you can even see Mt Taranaki in the North Island on a good day (my guide Gail told me that the previous day was the first day in about a year it had been seen thanks to the clear skies....unfortunately my day was not so clear!!).
I was the only person doing the trek and the guide was v helpful considering it was only my second time on the back of a horse. Along the way she gave alot of info on New Zealand which helped out with planning the rest of the trip!!.
Great views once you get to the end and you get a chance to do some cantering (is that what they call it??)
