you arrive from Wellington through the Cookstrait by Ferry..good luck with the weather through the strait....in Picton.whatever your transportation, hitch hiking not a bad idea, but take care and use your common sense. it should be quite safe!stay a while in picturesque Picton, nice cafes, short walks around the area or for a swim..enjoy

Abel Tasman Water Taxi's

by vtveen

Within the National park a couple of operators offer "water taxi transport". For instance Abel Tasman AquaTaxi offers a range of departures from Kaiteriteri varying from day trips, cruises and taxi services.Excellent way of transportation to or from one of the beaches to start a walk on the Coast Track through Abel Tasman National Park.Or just make a tour with the taxi and enjoy the stunning golden beaches, bays, coves and the seal colony on Tonga Island

Bay Rent-a-Car, Motueka

by Kakapo2

When I needed a car just for a day in Motueka I rented one from Bay Rent-a-Car. The people were friendly, the car (a Toyota Corolla) was good, just the price was a bit on the high side. It cost NZ$ 65 for the day (unlimited kilometres including insurance, unless you cause the damage) - plus petrol, of course. It was the cheapest option - and in such a remote place you have to go with it as there is no real competition. Still they advertise with cars "from $40 a day". Probably this applies to long-long-long-term rentals. But still I think it is not only more convenient but also cheaper than to take the bus. I checked how much it would cost to travel from Motueka to the Farewell Spit. To Collingwood alone it would cost $35 one way, so $70 return, and you would still not be at the Farewell Spit, and you would not get back to Motueka on the same day as the buses only leave twice a day - early...

Golden Bay Coaches: Abel Tasman and Heaphy Track

by Kakapo2

When driving around in the Abel Tasman National Park and Golden Bay areas I saw those Golden Bay Coaches every now and then. So I had a closer look at what they offer. They have interesting timetable trips but also offer charter trips.Operation centre is Takaka. But you can get on the bus at many different locations on the way between Nelson in the east and Collingwood in the west, for example Richmond and Motueka, but also a lot of smaller places. From Takaka they have a service to Wainui and Totaranui in the Abel Tasman National Park, and also to Collingwood (where the tour to the Farewell Spit starts with another company), and from Collingwood to the start of the Heaphy Track.Check timetables and fares on the internet. If I have read the timetables right the times are not suitable for return trips on the same day, as would be nice for Totaranui and Collingwood, as all trips have only...
