  • Good pub

    Nelson Nightlife

The Vic, Macs brew bar in Nelson is great, riht in the centre in Trafalgar street. It seemed the busiest place in town on a Monday. They had live music too. It's pretty big and they do beers for around $8-9 or as we had a 6 x 170ml beer tray to try 6 different beers for $20.Decent staff and a nice atmosphere with outside seating too.

  • Surprisingly good!

    Kaiteriteri Restaurants

With it's rather silly cartoonish signpost and it's position right next to the camping site, we didn't expect the world from this place... Well, we were wrong! Don't get me wrong, this is not michelin material, but the food they served was certainly some they could be proud of. Lovely, tender steaks, huge, fresh seafood plates, delicious...

Dangerous Kitchen on commercial street was the only place buzzing when we were in town even though it was peak season.Service was slow and one guy was asking for a cappuccino about ten times and another guy waiting for food for over an hour. The hot chocolate came in nice mugs but that was about it, it wasn't too good. • Lake Rotoroa

Nelson Lakes National Park Things to Do

This lake is not as popular as Lake Rotoiti, but just as beautiful. You can do some walking here to, ranging from 20 minutes to 2 hours. Just walk fast, because there are a lot of sandflies around there!

  • Lake Rotoiti

Nelson Lakes National Park Things to Do

You can do a lot of walks from here, most are starting at Kerr Bay. The walks range from 15 minutes to 6 hours. When we were there the forest was all blackened so our 1.5 hour walk wasn't very beautiful, but that was just a temporary problem hopefully.

Mount Angelus (2075m) is part of the Nelson Lakes National Park, and sits between Lakes Rotoiti and Rotoroa. which, funnily enough, is close by Nelson, but even closer to the little holiday resort of St Arnaud, at the north end of Lake Rotoiti. The most spectacular hiking access is along the Robert Ridge - a consistently high, sometimes narrow and...

  • Be friendly!

    Saint Arnaud Local Customs

There is nothing a New Zealander appreciates more from a tourist than some "pleases" or "thank-yous". New Zealanders live in special places like St. Arnaud because they want to, and all have alternative jobs and responsibilities apart from looking after tourists. They don't expect any tips, but an appreciative and friendly (but not familiar) manner...
