Mount John Observatory: Stargazing
A night spent at Lake Tekapo will give you the chance to visit Mt John Observatory for a night-time activity like no other. The observatory was built here because the location is just about perfect - these are the clearest skies in all New Zealand and the isolation means light pollution is absolutely minimal. Mount John overlooks the lake and the observatory is open for both night and day visits. A daytime visit is interesting if you haven't visited an observatory before - but night visits are something else again. You can't help but notice how clearly the stars shine out here in the empty spaces of Otago, and this is your chance to experience the crystal-clear viewing that is possible from observatories that are so far from reflected city lights. Moonless nights are best - it's so dark when you first get there but it's amazing how quickly your night vision kicks in and how much you can...
