From Cadrona, you have two choices of how you can get to Arrowtown and Queenstown. One, is by going through Cromwell, or two, the rough and tumble of Crown Range, which is also a longer but a much more scenic drive.
Since we can from afar, we might as well do the latter. One interesting point to note is that the Crown Range Road is the highest main road in New Zealand. The road brings you through mountains and interesting zigzag roads.
For a real adventure catch a glimpse of Middle Earth from on the River Anduin (The Kawarau River). Raft through the actual area where the 'Pillars of the Kings' were computer-generated onto the sides of the gorge. The Kawarau River is great for first time rafters, fun size rapids interspaced with long stretches of flat water, where you have the option to take in the scenery, have a swim or even a water fight!
Queenstown is just a short distance from Arrowtown and is very famous for its sports & adventure activities and beautiful scenery, For those who enjoy both the thrill & relaxation, you can visit both Arrowtown and Queenstown. Please go to my VT Queenstown page for more information.
This river is another location where the Lord of the Rings was being filmed. The river is also famous for its bungy jump off a bridge, and this was the first commercial bungee jump in the world.
Near to Arrowtown is the Gibbston Valley which is famous for its wineries and cheese factory. This will be a good outing from Arrowtown.
There are some nice forest walking tracks along the Arrow River which are very cooling especially in autumn.
Lake Hayes is a small lake along the journey from Queenstown to Arrowtown. It is worth to stop and visit this beautiful lake, especially during autumn with the colourful foliages.
Although autumn is the best time to visit Arrowtown and surrounding areas, you can visit during winter to experience the beautiful snow white scenery.
