    Rugged 'Sierra' type Mountains

by cnango Updated Aug 29, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: In Central Otago , the natural scenery is very beautiful. you can drove past golden fields of grain ,very green farmland and of course vineyards with grape plants growing in rows. In California we have the Sierra Madre Mountains, 'Madre' is Spanish for Mother and 'Sierra means like a saw blade. The mountains of Central Otago really are jagged like a saw a blade, unlike our "Mother Mountains" that are more rounded on top.

    The best moment!

by TheWanderingCamel Updated Apr 28, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Fondest memory: Driving up the Skippers Canyon Road, we were granted the rare privilege of the sighting of a New Zealand peregrine falcon - a Karearea
Our guide was so excited - these are very rare birds and seldom bother with carrion, preferring to take their prey on the wing - so to see one this close was most unusual. It gave us the best sighting we could have wished for. It was feasting on a dead possum on the road and was not about to leave its meal just because we were on the road. It flew onto a tree right by the road and simply sat there, waiting patiently for us to move on. It really was magnificent and a truly marvellous moment.

Arrowtown, not so far from Queenstown.

by kiwi Written Jun 2, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Visit the historic town of Arrowtown. It's not very large and doesn't take too long, although you can while away the time quite easily here!
The old town is interesting to walk around, most of the buildings are quite old, from gold mining days.
Go shopping, check the Village Green for activity, and be sure to visit the Chinese Village, shown here in the photo.
    See more photos here.

    Magical Glenorchy.

by kiwi Written Jun 2, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Drive up Lake Wakitipu and arrive at Glenorchy. This place is very special, so beautiful and mystical. Some of the Lord Of The Rings scenes were filmed in this territory, you can see why.
No matter what the weather is, this place will totally blow your mind away. Every kind of day, even rainy, is worth the visit.
Take a look at more photos on my Glenorchy page.

    The famous Oamaru White Stone.

by kiwi Written Jun 2, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: The town of Oamaru is unique with all it's buildings made from local White Stone. It's worth a visit here, to see the abundance of these buildings all in a small area, it's not a very big town. The older part of town, naturally, is near the coast. This area has been preserved and is particularly interesting when they re-enact old times.
Take a look at my Oamaru page.

Fondest memory: I love to see the Penny-Farthing bikes riding around during the celebrations of old times.

Gold strikes created a history here.

by kiwi Written Jun 2, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: There is so much history in the Otago Region. Although not very old by world standards, for New Zealand you can find some of our oldest structures here. Gold strikes in 1863 saw towns emerge, St Bathans being one. Here you see the old Vulcan Hotel, reputed to have a resident ghost and maybe why it survived the test of time while 12 other hotels in the same town have not.

Fondest memory: The old buildings, especially the ones made of stone, are undoubtedly one of my favourite features of Otago.

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: It is the start of autumn when I was in Queenstown, and some of the trees have already started to change colour. One of my fondest memory was seeing the bright red leaves of the trees along the streets of Queenstown, as I have never seen leaves which were so red before.

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: The 2 most famous rivers near to Queenstown are the Shotover and Kawarau Rivers where a lot of water activities such as jetboating are carried out. There is also a bungee jump off a bridge at the Kawarau River, and this is the first bungee jump in the world.

    Snow on the mountains

by victorwkf Updated Jun 2, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: The mountains surrounding Queenstown are covered with snow during winter and some of these mountains e.g. Mount Coronet have ski facilities during winter. These snow starts to melt and by late spring to summer, all the snow would be gone and the cycle repeats.

    Lake Wakatipu

by victorwkf Updated Jun 2, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: This is a beautiful lake surrounding Queenstown and you can go sailing and admire the beautiful surroundings. Lake Wakatipu is the third largest lake in New Zealand after Lake Taupo and Lake Te Anau. One interesting thing about this lake is that the water level drops a few inches every few hours and then rises back to normal again. Some say this is due to the regular compression and decompression of the lake.

by kiwi Written Feb 25, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Deep in Central Otago found a driveway. But check out the front lawn in the foreground! No mowers needed here! Just heather, thyme and rocks. Smells nice though. I'm taking the photo from the front balcony.
