Me in Queenstown by kiwigal_1 We took backpacks although I have seen people with suitcases. It really does depend on what you are doing however if you are taking public transport at all or staying in a backpackers then a backpack is much more portable than a suitcase!
Queenstown is a destination that is popular in summer and winter however you obviously need different gear depending on the season and what you plan to do. Winter For winter you will need snow gear (jackets and waterproof pants), scarfs, gloves and hats are recommended. If you are skiing or snowboarding it is cheaper if you bring your own however you can hire. Make sure you hire in town though as it is cheaper. Summer If you plan on doing any serious hiking then please refer to the Department of Conservation website for recommended gear for each track.
All of these things are available if you don't want to bring your own

If you get to Queenstown and find that you are missing something vital then don't worry as there are excellent outdoors retail outlets in town. New Zealand's homegrown retail store "Kathmandu" is highly recommended.

Queenstown Bay by travelteacher I was there in the winter, and it was cold (It never got above 4 C.). Although it did not snow until my last day, it preceeded to snow for 10 days straight after I left. Leave a Comment

Bring good hiking shoes if you plan to climb the hills around town. If you are coming in winter, you will need to dress warm - it is cold during the day and can be freezing here at night.
You should be able to find what you need in town.
If you forget to bring your good camera, you are wasting your trip. You can still buy a disposable camera or film if you run out. Leave a Comment

I forgot to pack my gloves and I regretted it in the early morning in Queenstown. I was there in autumn (April), so imagine what it's like in July - the middle of winter!
Beacause of the cold, make sure you have a spare set of batteries for your camera. They die quicker in colder climates. You can get them in Q'town, and they're not much more expensive than you would pay elsewhere, but if you got stuck in the middle of some scenic beauty spot in the middle of nowhere without a spare set, you would be cursing! If you come in winter, thick woollen socks and water proof shoes/boots, if your feet get cold and wet, its time to go back to your room. You can also get great little heat packs that you can shake and slip into shoes, if you put them by your toes especially, your day will be so much more enjoyable.
A good moisturiser and lip balm as it can be very dehydrating in Queenstown and surrounding mountain areas.
If you go camping or to some of the fishing spots nearby you definitely need insect repellent and citronella candles, or repellants that you can burn work well too against the sandflies.
Also, remember good sunglasses, for when your relaxing at a cafe, even in winter, as we get alot of clear sunny days.
