Arrowtown Bakery & Cafe

On a lovely sunny autumn day this busy little cafe was the perfect place to sit and take in the atmosphere. We chose to sit outside in Ballarat Arcade, where the seating was off the main thoroughfare. Service prompt and friendly.

Favorite Dish: Coffee and scones - Yum!

Mum and I had morning tea here when we visited Glenorchy. The coffee was good and there was a nice selection of snacks and a menu for more substantial meals. It is licensed.
I loved the fact that I got a cuddle from the owner's cat - I was missing mine!

Favorite Dish: The savoury scones are good.

Captains Restaurant

This restaurant had a warm welcoming feel, the atmosphere was casual and friendly as were the wait staff. The food excellent, well presented and good sized portions. It came to our table in a timely manner even though the place was busy.

Favorite Dish: We started with bread and dips which was a variety of breads with Hummus, Kumara (sweet potato) and Olive Oil/Balsamic vinegar dips. The breads were served warm and were full of flavour even on their own. The dips also very good.

For main I had a duet of Salmon. A beautifully cooked piece of Salmon was partnered with some of the best smoked Salmon I have ever tasted and served with simplicity.

My mother had baked pork sirloin with an apple glaze wich she said was very good.

Monty's Bar and Restaurant

A great place for a cold Saturday night in Queenstown. The atmosphere is casual pub style as is the food. Not expensive, not elaborate, well cooked and presented and good sized servings. The staff were attentive and friendly.

Monty's is a Monteith's Brewery Pub and offers the full range of beers and ciders.

Favorite Dish: I enjoyed a Lamb Shank in a Red Wine Jus with Cannelini beans served on potato mash and my Mum had Beef and Mushroom Pie. The lamb just fell off the bone and Mum's beef was well cooked and tender.

Favorite Dish: They have a lot of variesties burgers to choose from. Great taste, great value of money and all the staffs are friendly too. Avoid the peak hours during lunch as they are always long waits outside the restaurant. They also have b/fast time from 5.30am till about 9am. Make sure you grab a burger from Fergburger when you drop by Queenstown.

Winnie Bagoes Specialty is Thin Crusted Gourmet Pizzas with an assortment of toppings. At night they have live bands with lots of people dancing. Some people playing a game of billiards & others sit around the roaring fireplace laughing & chatting with a drink in hand. Then a retractable ceiling opens to allow in lots of fresh air and a view of the stars.

Lone Star: Huge Portions, Sitting Waiters
Kakapo2 profile photo

2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Kakapo2 1858 reviews

The Lone Star – full name: Lone Star Café & Rattlesnake Bar – is listed as a place which serves large and hearty meals. So no fine dining but filling empty stomachs. I know many people who already have enough when they see such portions piled on mega-sized plates.
I would not waste money and order a starter, as the mains are huge, and not cheap.

Although I can eat lots I am amazed how somebody can still eat a dessert after such a meal.

It is Lone Star tradition that the waiters – super Coolies in the Queenstown branch… - sit down at your table to tell you about the specials. Hubby finds this quirky, I find it strange but do not care. Not all waiters do get it properly, so sometimes customers even feel offended when the waiter suddenly sits at their table LOL

Most meals consists of a huge amount of meat but also fish and some vegetarian dishes are available. Only a very few mains under NZ$ 30.

I had a burrito which came with buffalo chips. Those chips were really delicious – although I did not succeed to eat them all ;-)

Open from 5.30pm till late (Fri/Sat from 5pm), whatever “late” means in Queenstown. Bar from 4.30pm (Fri/Sat from 4pm).

Boardwalk Seafood Restaurant, Queenstown: Superb but very Expensive Seafood at Top Location
Kakapo2 profile photo

3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Kakapo2 1858 reviews

Superb! Superb! Superb! This is a great place for seafood meals if you have some dollars to spend. Although the food is superb I think this is topped by the location. From the upstairs floor right on the waterfront you have great views over Lake Wakatipu and the peaks on the opposite side of the lake. In the evening it is even romantic to have dinner there.

Although the food is of good quality I still think it is overpriced. Starters slightly under $20, and the average price of a main course $35 to 40 is not for everybody's budget. And a lamb rack for $42... I do not really know... The famous seafood platter for two costs, BTW, $130... Ok, this is special and not for every day. But even a simple green salads comes to $7.50. This is just crazy.

Fergburger: The best burgers ever

A stop at Fergburger is a must! Either for lunch or a bite after partying Fergburger serves the best! I've never had such a good burger. Here you'll find a good selection of prime beef burgers and fish burgers (Codfather is one).

Favorite Dish: I went for the regular cheeseburger, which was fantastic. The meat was excellent and I had to come back a couple of times during my short weekend stay in Queenstown. Don't miss it - Fergburger is on it's own an attraction in NZ!
