Simply put, its the best burger on the south island! We specifically made a 2hr detour to come back and have one on our return north.
Its been around since 2000, by its popularity and quality, I would say that it will be there forever. Particularly around the typical dining hours, there is a line out the door. If you come at odd hours, there will still be people, but the wait will be much less.
I'd say that a 5 minute wait would be typical, but a 15 minute wait would start to be long.
Its run by a handful of young and energetic staff, but they would have to be in order to keep up with the demand. The menu is on the wall, the grill is just behind the counter and there's nothing else to it. What you see is what you get, and you can see the entire production right in front of you.
Favorite Dish: The burgers are large, juicy and quite simply put the best on the South Island. The meat is prime, the fixings fresh and the sauces tangy. There is even beer and wine on the menu for those of you who wish to pretend your juicy burger is a bit more refined.
There's the standard Ferg Berger. There's the Double Ferg. There's the Southern Swine Berger with tangy southern sauce and flavorful bacon. There's the lamb and chicken burgers as well.
There's even the Bun Laden with falafel for those veggies out there.
Oh and breakfast burgers too!

A more upscale restaurant located at the wharf, as the name suggests their specialty is definitely seafood. Nice selection of wines by the glass. Subdued lighting & decor, not an overwhelming number of seats and the kitchen area is open so you can watch the chefs at work from some seats.
Favorite Dish: Two of the best things were the entrees (appetizers) Salt & Pepper squid and steamed green lipped mussels. The char grilled salmon was melt in your mouth good. The rack of lamb itself was well cooked, but I found the minted peas to be a little strong/off-putting

There are no shortage of this style of pubs in NZ, but this one has the added bonus of offering lunch specials of bangers & mash and pea pie pud on the cheap. Food was decent, nice outdoor space. Nice selection of beers.
Favorite Dish: I tried the BLAT which had really fresh avocado & tomato even though it was late fall, but I think the bangers & mash was much better.

I stepped inside of this restaurant and felt like I was the one speaking a foreign language...in an English speaking country! This isn't a negative, the inside of this restaurant felt like I was transported to the French Alps. Service was super friendly, all in all a delightful restaurant.

A more upscale brewery restaurant. You can either stop in for a pint in the front room and watch some rugby or have a nicer dinner in the back (we chose this on our first night because it was by the fire and it was cold outside)
Favorite Dish: Fish & Chips. Typical, but it was a huge portion and absolutely delicious.

A homey kind of brewpub in Queenstown, also has a location in Christchurch. Beer was great! It was a miserable rainy day when we went and our bartender was out chopping wood for the fire inside. Sure it gets lively at night, but really liked it for a late lunch.
Favorite Dish: We went on half price pizza day so we had the Roast Chicken: bacon, Camembert and Plum sauce with a starter of salt & pepper squid which were both excellent.

One of my all time favourite dining experiences in NZ was to buy some live, green lipped mussels from the local supermarkets at about NZ$5 per kilo. They are kept in water tanks and you just scoop out the mussels and place them in a plastic bag.
The preparation was very basic. All I did was poach them until the shells opened and ate them au naturale while still hot.
I was given some local advice on poaching them in various sauces but I didn't want to lose the fresh taste of the sea on these green lipped beauties.
And to wash it down what could be better than a crips Marlborough Sound Sauvignon Blanc which are world famous for their high quality .
Simply delicious!

Winnies is located in the centre of Queenstown on the second floor of one of the towns oldest buildings. You can enjoy a great street view from their balcony.
serve an eclectic array of international style pizzas including Thai, Mexican, Moroccan flavours or even a Kiwi style roast.
I would recommend to book in advance as it is always busy and you can guess why... the pizzas are fantastic!
Favorite Dish: My favourite pizza was the Pescara topped with NZ green lipped mussels, garlic prawns, smoked salmon, roma tomatoes with fresh parmesan cheese, pesto & lemon.
The freshly baked garlic bread was really fantastic too!
