Bungy Jumping.: like latex?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Check out the bungy jumping action at one of the five sites around Queenstown.
If you're planning a jump, the Bungy Centre (Cnrs Camp & Shotover Sts), provides free transport throughout the day to the sites.
It's getting quite pricey these days, so even going and checking out the action without actually jumping is pretty cool.
(BTW - when I was growing up, jumps used to be free if you did it naked, too many people took advantage of this deal, and it got stopped a few years back - bummer for the budget backpacker aye)

AJ Hackett's Nevis Highwire Bungy is the way to go if you want to bungy jump in Queenstown.
When we went in the morning, the activity was closed due to high winds making conditions unsafe. When we went back to check at lunch, AJ Hackett's had decided it might be ok. As far as I was concerned it was still too windy, but what would I know?
So we climbed onto the bus and began our scary, bumpy, narrow mud-road journey to the infamous Nevis Highwire (click on the picture to get the full view).
When we got there (still windy), we were all strapped into harnesses and shuttled across the ravine - yes, you read correctly - the RAVINE, by cable car, to the metal cabin that was suspended on cables in mid air between 2 cliffs.
(If you get motion sickness I suggest you stay and occupy yourself back at the hotel) It was still windy and the little cabin was swaying back and forth in the strong wind tunnel created by the cliffs.
Anyway, the boys jumped from the cabin 134m to the ground - Apparently it was AWESOME - but you'll have to take their word for it as all I wanted was to get off that swinging tin shed.

Bungy Jumping.: The Ultimate Bungy - Nevis Returns on its Promise
Definitely a rush and they are lovely people - whether you're the wild ready to go kind or the timid kind (I was the later one). Great view and their safety precautions have won awards not to mention it was started by the infamous bungyman AJ Hackett.

Bungy Jumping.: The most amazing experience ever
If you are into adventure skip everything else and go straight to the "Nevis", the 2nd largest bungy in the world. At a wopping 134M (440ft) at the top its truly only for the brave. Don't pass up the opportunity, not only does it earn you bragging rights but if live with fears this will definetely rid you of those fears if you can make yourself jump. The 8.5 second free fall left me speechless, its the most amazing feeling! They have a 100% safety record so there is nothing to worry about, don't miss out!

If you have to jump off a bridge, make sure that someone ties your feet with a rope so you survive to tell about it!!! Lots of people come to Queenstown to try all the fun activities like jumping off a plane, a bridge, or speed boating in narrow canyons, etc... etc...

As for me just sitting there and watching people bungee was enough and the craving suddenly went away!

    Bungy Jumping.: AJ Hackett Bungy
No, I was not crazy enough to jump; however, my friend Sandi made the plunge. She jumped from the Kawarau Bridge (site of the first bungy in 1988). It was a beautiful location, and she had a blast. It was all very safe and organized, and a mere 142 feet! Photos and DVD's available for purchase to record the event (and fear) in living color.

The shuttle leaves from the Shotover Jet Building several times a day.

Bungy Jumping.: Bungy Jumping @ Kawarau Bridge
Visit this 100 year old suspension bridge and also the original home of Bungy - the world's first commercial bungy site (since November 1988).

The Kawarau Bridge, situated 20 minutes from Queenstown city centre, is the site for a 43m bungy jump above the Kawarau River.

Bungy Jumping.: Tandem Bungy at Kawarau Bridge
We decided to jump at the original Kawarau Bridge. Besides it's the only place where we can do the tandem jump!
It was my first - and definitely unforgettable. Was so nervous and almost throwing up.... but finally managed to pull myself together.
will do it again if I have a chance :)

Tips. Magazines/Brochures which were handed free at the airport at arrival usually has cupons which give 50% discount for buying Bungy Jumping video!
