Jet Boating, Queenstown
You have never experienced the sheer speed of a leisure boat until you have tried Shotover Jet. Totally thrilling! To cap the entire experience, our guide was also a comic act. The twists and tight turns really keeps you at the edge of your seat. The guide would drive his boat at break-neck speeds and then suddenly make a 360 degree turn.
Ever since arriving in New Zealand (Adventure Capitol of the Wolrd) I have constantly heard about New Zealands invention of the jet boat. Before heading down to Queenstown we heard rumor that it was home to New Zealands best jet boat ride, Shotover Jet. We figured if we are going to see what all the rave is about, it might as well be on the best.
Prices are $99 pp. for a 25 minute ride. Kind of pricey in my opionon but you only live once right? Shotover jet is the only jet boat tour aloud to opperate in Shotover Gorge and has been doing so since 1970.
The red boats that thrust out over 800 litres of water through its internal propellar per second, can operate in only 6 inches of water and can literally turn on a dime, famous for their 360 degree turns. The experience drivers bring you inches from the gorge walls and had me thinking "i just paid $99 to die".
A great experience and recommeded to anyone wanting to try something different while in Queenstown.
Jet boarding is one of the many activities you can do while in Queenstown, and I think this activity is peculiar to New Zealand (we have seen jet board in Huka Falls as well), so you cannot miss it!
Your crazy driver will show a rocky canyon from the river on high-speed boats, while performing 180° and 360° rotations and coming veeery close to rocks!
You will get wet despite the raincoats you will be given :) My suggestion is to wear sunglasses, so that you can experience the ride without closing your eyes because of the speed and the water.
Tickets (108 NZ$ per person) can either be bought at the Info site downtown (a free shuttle is provided to bring you to the premises, but you can also drive there indipendently), or directly on the site. Tours start every 45 minutes and last 30 minutes.
Adrenalin stuff - jetboating(totally awesome), bungee jumping(from 3 different locations and heights), skydiving, skiing, white water rafting, plus much more that i cant think of at the moment! also , the town itself is nice to chill out and look around, the bars are always lively at night! arrowtown nearby is an old historic town from the gold rush, nearby theres also an old chinese settlement from the gold rush.
wanaka nearby is worth a look, just an hour up the road, they do some adrenalin stuff , much cheaper than queenstown! puzzling world is a bit of fun here too with its maze!(yes, i did cheat to get my way out!)
the luge .in queenstown is very tame but has spectacular views from the cable car of the mountians and lake.
The "waterjet" was originally built by Bill Hamilton, later and more formally know as Sir Charles William Feilden Hamilton, in 1954. The boat was designed to navigate the narrow and shallow rivers in the Queenstown area, such as the Shotover and Kawarau rivers, for us this was yet another adventure in QT, the 360 degree turn was fantastic and AJ and I did so much shouting and hooting that I am sure the others got a lil embarrassed :DD
The most adrenaline-pumping activity in the Queenstown area is a ride on the jetboat at Shotover Rapids. I did not have the guts to do bungee jumping so the next best thing to do was to shoot the rapids. Charging over the rapids at speeds of 70 km/h or more, the jetboat driver makes hair-raising swerves and sudden 180 degree turns just inches from the rocks. My legs were wobbly after I emerged from the 30-minute ride.
Wow! A thrilling jet boat ride like no other. Acutally, hair raising at times. Be prepared for numerous 360 degree turns up, and down the canyon. The driver does give plenty of warning with his hand to hold on tight (heated handrails help during the cold days). He will also insist on driving the boat extremely close to the canyon rock wall (just for that added white knuckle effect) when he has plenty of room in the center of the river! Aside from the thrills of the ride; it is a beautiful area, and a great way to spend a few hours.
Our driver Shane assured us he had properly completed the 6 weeks/120 hours of required driver training!
A must-do whenever you're in Queenstown. You sit in these speed boats and skim over shallow waters of Shotover River. These boats are originally made in New Zealand. Prices for the shortest ride is NZ$85 for adults and NZ$45 for children which includes free entry into Underwater World.
The jetboats in Queenstown are quite an adventure. There are now 3 options available. The fastest, thrill seeking option is the Shotover Jet. It departs/docks at their pier at Jack's Point. An easy journey via car or the local bus. This is the shortest yet fastest option with donuts and wall-hanging curves.
The other two options leave from the Queenstown Wharf in downtown Queenstown. These are the longer two options in the journey's time/distance and give the opportunity to see a lot more of the local scenery. They are very fast, they just don't have the canyon wall-hanging curves to their adventures.
All there options are rather expensive, however they are a must do when traveling to Queenstown. Safety wise, any adventure sport has its risks, however if the locals are comfortable with putting their own 10-11yr children onto these at the end of primary school celebration, you should have no fears.
The Shotover Jet boat ride was fantastic. It's a lot of fun skimming over the water and doing 360 turns right next to cliffs.
Don't bring your camera, your pictures will come out blurry and your camera will get wet.
You can buy a sovenior photo of your boat full of people in mid-360.
Hubby and I did this tour on a recent visit to Queenstown and it was excellent.
The ride was about 30 minutes long and even though the river was running a bit high, the driver still managed to add lots of excitement and 360's ... yiihaa.
The best part was when he did a quick turn which came way too close to the sheer rock wall of the canyon but I'm sure it was perfectly measured.
Well worth doing ...especially for the first timer.
Outdoors activities are mostly at Queensland, it wasn't very warm coming up here, but if you are in the area is once in a life time a "MUST" Nothing you have experienced will have you prepared for the thrill and excitement of a Shotover Jet ride; it's an adrenaline rush you'll never forget!
world of most exciting jet boat ride.
Nothing you have experienced will have you prepared for the excitement of a Shotover Jet ride.
