You've eaten all that good food - why not take some home with you? The Cheesery at Gibbston Valley Winery in the Kawarau Gorge makes some really great cheese and sells some varieties vacuum packed - most countries will allow the importation of cheese packed this way, and the staff are pretty well advised about regulations for most places. Of course, before you buy, you'll want to try and there is always the chance to do that. Cheese tasting sample platters are available for $5.00 and there are always free smaller samples of three or four cheeses available .They make some excellent sheep and goats' milk cheese as well as several soft cheeses, fetta style and cheddar-type cows' milk cheese.
If you're not sure about carrying cheese home with you - or you're still on your travels - they also sell some good local preserves, fruit cheeses, chutnies and such.
Further along the highway, as you pass through Cromwell, you'll find fruit barns selling all sorts of local goodies. We love the dried nectarines and peaches - they're so good - and, again, there are lots of locally produced preserves - jams, chutneys, pickles and sauces.
