If you're thinking of attending the Warbirds Over Wanaka airshow, you need to make your plans well in ahead. The show is hugely popular and growing more so, with people coming from all over the world to attend. Accommodation in Wanaka and the surrounding district is at an absolute premium, many places being booked out for the two years ahead as folk book for the next one before the one they're currently attending is even over.
Most places will only take bookings for the whole Easter period - 4 nights, from Thursday to Monday.
It's not only accommodation that's heavily booked. The town's restaurants are all full to bursting every night and those in the know make their restaurant bookings weeks in advance.
If you haven't been to Wanaka before and don't know the town, you'll find any number of websites listing options from campsites (remember, it's Easter - and can be very cold!) and backpacker hostels to the most luxurious lodges.

Be careful when calling your office to announce that you will not be able to work today becuase of a bad flue (but in fact a great snow powder day session in prospect).
Be smart... and do not forget the suncream to avoid fatal clues when going back to work ;-)

When you are planning to ski/surf/hicking in the mountain, you always have to know about the snow/weather forecast and avalanche risk level.
Jsut have a look to the website link to learn about the current avalanche risk depending on your destination area in NZ.
