Summer on the South Island - Pack for ALL seasons

by amandajayne81

We have just returned to Queensland from a holiday in the South Island (Christchurch-WestCoast-Queenstown-Dunedin and Lake Tekapo). We wore everything from Summer clothes (shorts and shirts) to tracksuits and jackets. Pack for all sorts of weather. We had a few days of rain too. Have a great time we really enjoyed it all. Would definitely recommend the Glacier Explorers trip at Mt Cook. Was pretty impressive for us folk that don't really know that much about ice and snow.

Storing your luggage while hiking - Queenstown

by Josilver

I did the Milford a year ago and was staying at the Queenstown YHA on my return. I stored my backpack in their locker. It is one of those ones where you put $2 in the slot and keep the key. The lockers aren't huge so if you have a lot of stuff you might need 2. If you are staying at a hotel, most will store things for you for a short amount of time.

What to bring

Better bring backpack if you're travelling by Bus. If you rent a car any kind of luggage would be fine - walking boots or cross training shoesand comfortable sandals for summer- warm jacketNZ weather can change. Even during summer it could suddenly be cold when there is a cold wind from the antartic.- anorak... it rains a lot in fiordland area esp. Milford Sound- Sunglasses you can buy toiletries here. supermarket and pharmacy are everywhereStock up at the larger cities in big supermarket as price is cheaperToiletries u'd want to have:- sunblock- Face moisturizer & body lotion- lip balm- insect repellent. comes in handy esp. in lake area if you want to do kayaking- Counterpain or BanG - really helpful after long walk...they help relieving legsache camera and battery charger. always charge your battery in regular basis. you don't want to miss a moment

Stuff for hostels

by dln6874

Most hostels in South Island don't provide duvets and charge you anywhere from $1-$4 to hire one. Bring a sleeping bag. Plus, you should do some of the longer hikes here and you'll need a sleeping bag for that too. Buy a BBH card. It's NZ$40, but $20 of it is a phone card with good rates. You will save $2 off of each night's stay in a BBH hostel. Most hostels in NZ are covered by BBH and you can buy these cards in the hostel.
