Favorite thing: We stayed in Fox Glacier township January 2009 and whilst there was no snow in the town there is of course plenty of ice etc with the Glacier itself. It was a beautiful time of the year to visit. Don't forget to drive the 5 or so minutes out of Fox Glacier to Lake Matheson and do the walk around and also stop at the Fox Glacier viewing area. What a great spot. We look back fondly at our few nights there.

Favorite thing: An ATM machine is available in Franz Josef just outside the Mt Cook Ski Plane Building. Eftpos and credit cards are accepted for most services.
There is no ATM facility in Fox Glacier so do withdraw enough cash before you head for Fox Glacier.
Money Changer could be found at the Fern Grove Souvenirs at main road.
For forex exhchange in Fox Glacier head for the Alpine Guides on the main road.

Fondest memory: The walk to Lake Matheson was the first time I got to see one of these fantastic, brightly coloured pigeons on our whole trip (and the only one I saw up close, as the other, also seen in the Alps, was seen just from the car window).
Fortunately, he wasn't too shy, so I could stand beneath him for a good photo opportunity.
Gorgeous. Finding this bird was one of the most special moments of my NZ trip, which up until now, had been quite lacking in birdlife viewing, no matter how hard I searched (apart from seabirds at the coast)

Although it is much smaller than the town of Franz Josef, Fox was tons of fun. I was only there 2 nights (that was plenty), but on the second night, everyone I had met in town was at the same bar!
