Decided to take the short drive out to Lake Matheson cafe after a disappointing meal in Fox Glacier town the night before. The cafe is in a country setting with lovely views of the mountains and with the added bonus of a great sunset. The cafe is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.Found the service and food good, although i wanted the NZ lamb this was finished by the time i arrived so ended up ordering a gourmet pizza.
This makes an ideal place for a stop after a visit to the lake, free parking next to the cafe.Table reservations accepted.

    Mountain Goats Cafe: Uninspiring

The Mountain Goats Cafe is one of the dining rooms in the Heartland Hotel in Fox Glacier.

The cafe is located in a large open dinning room which was quite impersonal. The service was good but again a bit impersonal. I wouldn't recommend it.

Favorite Dish: For mains I chose a slow braised Venison Pie which looked very tempting. However the meat was quite tough and I really couldn't tell that it was venison.

Mum had Crumbed Chicken in a mustard Cream sauce which she enjoyed but found the meat portion a bit small.

We decided on desert so I tried a Pavlova with fresh fruit and Passionfriut while Mum went for a Custard slice with Berry Compote. Mum's desert was as described but my Pavlova was filled with Berry Compote - not a Passionfruit seed in sight. It tasted good though

Cook Saddle, Cafe and Saloon: Hope you have a big appetite

The theme is standard western saloon with lots of timber and old leather. Very warm and friendly

Favorite Dish: I had a fillet steak topped with prawns and served with seasonal vegetables. My medium rare steak was cooked just right though there could have been a bit more sauce.

My mother had a Mixed Grill which included, steak, egg, sausages, bacon and chicken wings and tomatoes. I had the sausages for breakfast the next morning.

Cook Saddle Cafe & Saloon: Go Hard or Stay Home

    Cook Saddle

The interior is decorated with odd antiques and mountain paraphernalia. Its set up as a rustic wood cabin, with a central fire place and hearth.

The setting is very casual but the food is quite tasty and portions are generous.

I typically avoid writing reviews of places that are already posted ample times, but I was rather impressed with the laid back atmosphere, service and food.

Favorite Dish: Breakfasts are offered all day, but the dinners are great. We sampled among other things, the whitebait fritters, the meatball pasta and the desserts. All were quite good.

There is a rather extensive selection of beers and a fully stocked bar too.

Cook Saddle Cafe and Saloon: Nice Al Fresco Dining

    by Aidy_p Written Apr 13, 2007

    Nice layout, delicious food

The cafe gave us an old "western Bar" kind of feel. Jac and I were deciding on whether we should eat indoors (They have a nice fireplace), or just gawk at Fox Glacier while feeding ourselves. It was a little chilly though. But heck, how often will you ever get to dine with such a wonderful view? We chose to do the latter. Just throw on some thick jacket and enjoy the meal.

Favorite Dish: We ordered ourselves pasta. Did not try the other stuff or else I'd be sleeping on the wheels with my full stomach. But no regrets. Great food!

fox cafe: amazing BLT's and chocolate cake

Absloutly the best BLT in the world. New Zealanders have a knack for making some great Blt's and this is the best one I've come across. Try it! The chocolate mud cake is pretty much the best out there too.

Cook Saddle Saloon & Cafe: Local place

by didgeridorien Written Apr 18, 2006

You can get all-day breakfast, burgers and snacks from $5. This restaurant specialises in seafood and steaks. It's very nicely decorated and the people are friendly.

Favorite Dish: I had a toasted sandwich with cheese, ham, pineapple and mushrooms and I loved it.

Saddle Cafe and Saloon: All Kinds of Food

by travelteacher Written Oct 17, 2004

The place is very homey with a fireplace dividing the bar from the restaurant. There is a wide selection of different styles of food, and a full bar.

Favorite Dish: Both the pasta and the dinner salad contained fresh and yummy vegetables. And there was a good selection of reasonably priced local wines.

    Great coffee - Matheson Cafe

Ths Matheson Cafe is located at the Lake Matheson visitor centre. On a fine day the outdoor area has most fabulous views of Mt Cook and the Southern Alps.

Favorite Dish: The coffee is great and nice big cups
