Fox Glacier Things to Do

  • Fox Glacier by helicopter.

This was an amazing experience and something i will never forget.Visited Fox and Franz Josef Glacier by helicopter and landed on Fox Glacier on a perfect evening. The trip lasts about 25 minutes and you get to spend 10 minutes on the snowfield .Cost of trip was 225$ (N.Z). The whole experience felt safe in the hands of Brook our pilot.

  • Lake Matheson

While in Fox Glacier town a visit to Lake Matheson is well worth while. On a calm day the reflection of the mountains in the lake are fantastic.A car park and good restaurant are available at the start of the walk.If you get there early morning before the breeze picks up you should have a good chance of some nice reflections.

  • Walk up to Fox Glacier.

Did this walk in perfect conditions which takes about 1 hour return, unless you keep stopping to take a photo. The last part of the walk is quite steep but safe as the pathway is all marked out.If you go with a guide you are allowed to walk on the actual glacier, otherwise you are restricted where you can go.Tip; take plenty of water!

  • Helicopter to the Glacier

I love helicopter rides. It is the best way to see things. Rides where you can get out on tops of mountains are great but when you get out on a glacier its even better. There are a number of helicopter companies operating from Fox Glacier but all offer similar flights; from a 20 minute flight up the glacier to a 40 minute flight over both glaciers...

  • From Haast to Fox Glacier

State Highway 6 meets the west coast shortly after leaving the town of Haast and follows the coast most of the way to Fox Glacier. The vegetation of the area is so different from the alpine region and that found east of the Alps. A fantastic view of the Tasman Sea and up and down the coast can be had at Knights Point.

  • Ride a bike in Fox Glacier

Fox Glacier is such a green place. Why not take a green way to see the sights?? You can ride to the Fox Glacier thru this amazing rainforest track. It's a winding, pleasant track, as well as a dramatic landscape with different, crazy shapes trees. And the light that comes into this thick forest is just spectacular. You can also bike to Lake...

  • A Short Drive into Town

Driving towards Fox Glacier Township, you'll catch the magnificant view of the snow-capped mountains. Beyond that lies the lovely Fox Glacier. Jac and I chose this wonderful place to have our lunch. We were truly famished bythe time we arrived at Fox Glacier from Franz Josef Glacier.

  • Hike A Glacier

We came to Fox Glacier for the same reason everyone else does; to see the glacier! We had planned to do a helihike. Unfortunately, Mother Nature did not cooperate. They were able to schedule us on a 3.5 hour walking tour instead. The company outfits you with everything possible to make you comfortable. They knew we would be wet, but wanted us to be...

Fox is a glacier close to Franz Josef. If you don't do a glacier hike at the latter, do one at Fox, although I understand it's not as spectacular, however is less commercialised.

  • Uninspiring

The Mountain Goats Cafe is one of the dining rooms in the Heartland Hotel in Fox Glacier. The cafe is located in a large open dinning room which was quite impersonal. The service was good but again a bit impersonal. I wouldn't recommend it. For mains I chose a slow braised Venison Pie which looked very tempting. However the meat was quite tough and...

The theme is standard western saloon with lots of timber and old leather. Very warm and friendly I had a fillet steak topped with prawns and served with seasonal vegetables. The interior is decorated with odd antiques and mountain paraphernalia. Its set up as a rustic wood cabin, with a central fire place and hearth. The setting is very casual but the food is quite tasty and portions are generous.I typically avoid writing reviews of places that are already posted ample times, but I was rather impressed with the laid...

  • Nice Al Fresco Dining

The cafe gave us an old "western Bar" kind of feel. Jac and I were deciding on whether we should eat indoors (They have a nice fireplace), or just gawk at Fox Glacier while feeding ourselves. It was a little chilly though. But heck, how often will you ever get to dine with such a wonderful view? We chose to do the latter. Just throw on some thick...

  • amazing BLT's and chocolate cake

Absloutly the best BLT in the world. New Zealanders have a knack for making some great Blt's and this is the best one I've come across. Try it! The chocolate mud cake is pretty much the best out there too.

You can get all-day breakfast, burgers and snacks from $5. This restaurant specialises in seafood and steaks. It's very nicely decorated and the people are friendly. I had a toasted sandwich with cheese, ham, pineapple and mushrooms and I loved it.

  • All Kinds of Food

The place is very homey with a fireplace dividing the bar from the restaurant. There is a wide selection of different styles of food, and a full bar. Both the pasta and the dinner salad contained fresh and yummy vegetables. And there was a good selection of reasonably priced local wines.

Fox Glacier Transportation

  • Take a helicopter.

I understand that there are guided tours on foot but they take some time (& risk) so the best way to see the Glacier is on one of the many helicopter tours. The views you get going up and coming down are amazing.

The driving speed limit is 100 kms for all highways in New Zealand. It really it dead on. It's quite hard to drive any faster. I only manage 120 km/h top speed only on a straight road. When the speed limit is 30km/h, it really is that low on very winding roads. There's a lot of gravel, ice or mud on the roads. On the mountain highways, there are...

Fox Glacier What to Pack

  • wkcsmt's Profile Photo

by wkcsmt Updated Jan 21, 2005

    2 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Luggage and bags: A day pack is useful. You can fill it with a drink bottle and some snacks if you want, especially when it's a long trip.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: 3-4 layers of warm upper body clothing, sunglasses and sun protection. For colder months, bring warm hat & gloves.

Avoid JEANS...they are not recommended on wet days as they become very cold and uncomfortable to wear!!

Photo Equipment: Bring your camera & lots of film or a digital camera.
