This walk takes 1 hour and 20 minutes return an dfollows the Waiho riverbed to the Glacier Terminal.
If you look closely in the centre of this photo you can see a huge hunk of ice broken of the glacier and flowing along the river! It is incredible to see this ice!

Fox Glacier is 30 min away from Franz Josef Glacier.
The Fox Glacier is a smaller township compared to Franz Josef.
Fox Glacier is renowned for Lake Matheson's stunning reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman.

Hari Hari is a small dairy farming town located about almost equal distance from Franz Josef Glacier and Hokitika.
It is only 50 minutes away from north of Franz Josef Glacier.
Although it is a small town it still provide accommodation, restaurants and tours to the west coastal and also rainforest or mountain walks.
Visit Lake Lanthe while you are in Hari Hari.

Walk up the "Sentinal Rock Walk" for a distant view of Franz Josef Galcier, an easy 20 minute return walk from the public car park.

This walk is very rugged but very good as at the end it is worth while to see this amazing receding glacier

This is as far as you can go on foot without an organised guided tour. It is possible, however, to take a helicopter or go skydiving above this glacier should you be the more adventurous type!!

Incredible, but taken some years ago when Franz Josef Glacier was bigger, you can see people "down" there!

Franz Josef is 5 hrs from Queenstown, 5 hrs from Christchurch and 1 hr 30 mins from Hokitika. It is a must see on your journey to South Island.
