walking up to the glacier and being so close to it is a wonderful experience. The weather was wonderful and the colours of the ice fantastic. It really lets you see that we do have to care for this earth when you see just how far the glacier has receded.

climb either Fox Glacier. We booked our walk before we left for New Zealand. Everyone who goes to NZ wants to walk the Glaciers. It can become very busy and you may not be able to get a walk. It does get cold on the Glacier - I would recommend a 12.30 walk if you are doing a half day walk. On the walks you have 3 guides, one is for people who wish to go fast, one for the medium people and one for people who want to take there time and take pictures. I took the third.

    THE HIKE ON ICE (I)

    by I-Believe-I-Can-Fly Written Sep 10, 2004

The hike up the glacier was really something else -- our guide swung his pickaxe and made new path each time to make it easier to climb up and down.

ARE YOU AN ADVENTUROUS OR LESS CONFIDENT TYPE?

    by I-Believe-I-Can-Fly Written Sep 10, 2004

After some instruction on how to walk on the glacier and safety stuff, we were off for our hike. Our group was split into 2 groups, one for the adventurous and the other for less confident people.

Seeing the glacier in one way or another - climbing up to it, or flying over it, is number 1 at Franz Josef.

    Ice Blocks

by Atre Written Feb 15, 2004

Where the glacier melts and turns into a river you can watch giant blocks of ice be pushed down the river, the landscape here is littered with iceblocks. You can even pick up iceblocks and lick them!

    Waterfalls

by Atre Written Feb 15, 2004

There are several high waterfalls you pass on the way to the glacier, and these almost surpass the glacier in their beauty. You can drink the water also and it is very cold and refreshing.

Proabably the most fun place to hike is the huge crevices through the ice falls. This is the place that you will be thankful for wearing waterproof clothing... (or wish the hell you did...)

The strong winds up here carve out unique shapes in the ice... You will likely pass through some ice tunnels along the way... (Good place to rest your tired legs, and pause for that photo op...)

Near to the glacier there are many wonderful walking tracks. The most popular walk is to see the glacier obviously. From the car park it is 45 minutes each way to the closest point for viewing.

    Easy walk
