Bungy Jumping

by grets

We stop at a 143 foot high bridge to watch some idiot jump off attached to a rubber band. I am left waiting and waiting building up the anxiety on the bridge while they have a break. Even Brent has deserted me. The rest of the bus are down at the viewing platform, cameras at the ready. From a bus load of 44 passengers, there is one person jumping, 42 people wathcing and one person turning the other way (my mother). My feet are wrapped in towels and secured by luggage straps after I've climbed through the bridge safaety railings and on to the platform. Next the elastic is attached, then I waddle to the edge of the platform (which is not easy when your feet are tied together and your knees are rattling). I pose for a photo with the company newsletter, and then for the countdown.5-4-3-2-1-Bungy! I look around. Isn't something meant to happen at this stage? Oh, yes, I was meant to jump. No...

Parapenting

by grets

Back into Queenstown for the pick up for the parapenting. By this afternoon, the wins has built up quite a bit, and it is too much to fly from the Gondola, so we end up paying a supplement to go from Coronet Peak. Wow! The view from the top isabsolutely unbelievable. In just a few minutes we are strapped into a baby-seat-type harness, and the instructor, who is behind you, hooks you up to the banana-shaped parachuteYou catch a wind and walk forward until the ground disapperas underneath you - and you are airborne! Noemally, from the Gondola, the flight lasts 7-8 minutes, we are up for over 20 minutes! What an incredible experience! We cathc a thermal, drift up and slightly across, just hanging around, cicling aove the ridge - wow!The instructor does a 360 degree turn and something he calls a wind-tip tuern. That is very exciting, especially spiralling downwards at speed! We seem to be up...

White Water Rafting

by grets

Before we even get to the river, we have changed into wetsuits, and on the river bank we are given life jackets, helmets and a paddle. Plus safety instructions. Lots of different orders to make us do different things. I am getting a little concerned at this stage, thinking "I'm never going to remember all this".Some stretches are really quite smooth, whereas some bits are too exciting for words! You are too busy paddling to have time to worry about your safety, although two people have actually dies on this strecth of river in the last month (November 1995), while rafting with Danes! It is all really quite hard work. We hit the rocks alongside the river a few times. When we go through the rapids, the raft bends and buckles, gets filled with water and the "jump" out the other end. There are a few tricky sections where there are people standing on the bank (read: rocks) with safety ropes...

Jetboating

by grets

In Queenstown we meet the Shotover Jet people at The Station and are taken to the start of the ride. We don waterproofs and life jackets, then board the jet boat. We have brought our own jackets and waterproof trousers, having been warned that you get very wet.Jetboats differ from other boats in that they use an internal propeller (impeller) for propulsion. Water is drawn in through an inlet in the bottom of the boat, then driven out through the rear with great force, thus thrusting the boat forward. Steering, braking and reverse is done much in the same way as a jet aircraft using deflectors and thrust buckets. The driver comes within millimetres of the canyon walls - in fact he touches it twice - at great speed in just inches of water. 360 degree turns, bouncing in our own wake. Got very wet! The 360 degree turns are best, and some of the close shaves with the rock. It does occur to me...

Tandem Mountain biking

by grets

At Te Anau we hire a tandem. which was an interesting experience. We found it a little difficult initially, but soon got the thythm going. We went along the road down to the lake and on to the golf course, then headed back through the woods. Different! I couldn't see where I was going, sitting at the back. There was one particular fairly steep downhill section which ended in a 3ft wide bridge without a hand rail! Great fun though. Tandem and other mountain bikes can be hired in Te Anau

On South Island we had the opportunity to go horse riding. Being my first time, I was a little apprehensive, but it felt "right" walking around this magnificent countryside atop a horse. Can be adapted to suit any ability! Horse!

Hunting

During our stay on a farm just outside Dunedin, David goes off with the farmer hunting rabbits for the cats' tea. Rabbits are a real nuisance to the farmers, and they need to be kept under control. The farmer provided the gun.

Sailing

by grets

We spend a lazy, sunny afternoon sailing in Auckland harbour on board the Pride of Auckland. The wind and weather is just perfect for it and we are served muffins and a hot drink, given a running commentary and the chance to take your turn at the helm. David, my dad and I all have a go, one other couple and an old lady, that's all - I find that rather surprising!

Luge

by grets

From Rainbow Springs (Rotorua) we rush off to catch the gondola to the top of Mount Ngongotaha. From the top there is a great view of the surrounding area. Once at the top we hired a luge to get back down again. It is a little like a sled, but without the snow. Never having been on a luge before we decide to take the beginners run. I think that is a bit of a mistake, as although it is good fun, it is rather too slow for our liking. Having travelled the 900 metres down on the luge, you need to get the luge back up to the top again - hence the chairlift!
