The Christchurch Tramway:...

by timnz2000

The Christchurch Tramway: don't bother. They installed this at some rediculous cost to make the city even more old-fashioned (like you thought it was possible). I think it costs $10 to go on a tiny 2km loop around a few of the city's major attractions. The restaurant is very good however.

In the Wai-O-Tapu region is a geiser known to spred up at 10h15am each day. A lot of people are going to this place each morning just to look at this guy putting some soap in this hole and to watch the 'geiser' for less than 10 seconds. Don't loose your earlymorning time over there. OOOh Wahou...

I was in Los Angelas airport LAX, I had a 7 hour wait, and i went to check the screens and this guy came up to me and said, I seen you looking at thiose girls over there. He said the only way you can get out of this is if you pay a fine of $10.00 $20.00 or $100.00. I was stupid i gave him $10.00 i didnt realize what was happening he caught me off guard, I gacve him $10.00 in american funds which was like $23.00 in Canadian, arg i was mad when i figured out that he was a soliciter.

lack of street smarts. Many tourists from Europe or the Americas fall into the trap of assuming that because NZ is an underpopulated backwater, they won't be at risk from crime. Take the same care you would anywhere. Beware of theft in particular, and remember to count your change whenever you buy anything.

A little bit of a tourist trap, maybe more something to be aware of. In the 'city centre' area, you need to pay from 20c to $2 for car parking (20c is about 20 minutes I think, $2 for up to two hours.) So, first of all, you need to have a few coins on you before you go there! Secondly it means you either have to do a fair bit of walking and keep a good eye on the time or else you have to move the car a few times and pay MORE money to move somewhere else! There ARE a few free carparks a bit out of town though. Otherwise, however, driving in Rotorua is bliss!!

I hate to say it but the Polynesian Spa seems ridiculously expensive. Something like $10 for one pool $28 for another! The old Blue Baths at $7 were much more reasonable and a lovely experience! Now, I didn't go to the Polynesian Spa so who knows it COULD be well worth the price. Or not. It IS thermal but there MIGHT be other thermal pools in the area - lots of hotels advertise that they have at least little thermal pools. Mind you, the Polynesian Spa offers a massage which also involves water jets (about $60, I think) which DOES sound most theraputic. But I have to admit, the last time I DID go there, BEFORE they hiked up the price, I found the staff there unfriendly. However, it could be under new management, different staff now.

Well! I wouldn't call it a tourist trap BUT! I finally managed to talk myself into indoor rock climbing at a place called 'The Wall' in the main town area. Well, I go in there and am asked 'Where's your partner?' I asked the man what he meant. He told me 'You need someone to hold the rope for you.' Fine but the brochure never told me that! So I couldn't do it - why one of the staff couldn't help hold the ropes I do not know. I'm not saying don't go, it's probably heaps of fun. Just don't go alone. Go with at least one other person to the wall. My goodness I felt so lonely after that and couldn't do the indoor rock-climbing!

Thermal Village in Rotorua:...

Thermal Village in Rotorua: There are two entrances, and the Village has been split-up in two. These two parts are NOT connected. If you want to see everything you have to pay two times. This information is not made available at the entrances.
