Kiwi Experience by martin_nl For getting around New Zealand there are many options. Probably the best would be to hire a car or even better a campervan, but if you travel indepently, are short on money and want to meet loads of other travellers I would recommend taking a tour on a hop on hop off bus. There are three main companies that offer this kind of transportation: -Kiwi Experience -Magic Bus -Stray Stray is the newest and I haven't heard too many good stories about them. Lots of buses breaking down, bad phone operators, rude bus drivers and sometimes a bit too alternative. However it would be the most budget choice out of the three. Magic Bus caters for independent travellers of all age groups, however they seem to attract a somewhat older crowd of people at the end of their 20s and 30+. They have good services and I haven't heard anything bad about them. I travelled on the Kiwi Experience Bus. Some people want to give this company a bad reputation, by saying it's only for people of 18 years old. I have to say that this is not rue at all! Yes KE caters for somewhat younger people than the Magic Bus, but they visit all the highlights of the country and offer good discounts for every activity you might be interested in. If you are around 25 and don't know if you should choose KE or not, I'd say go for it, there are lots of people on the bus of your age. I had a great time with them, they are flexible and friendly too and I made lots of friends on the bus! If you want a more outdoors experience I suggest taking a look at Flying Kiwi. This group is not as flexible as the others, but if you want you can still hop on and off wherever you want. Leave a Comment

Spaceship Campervan by kiwi These micro campers, are smaller than most campervans, yet good value. Better than hiring a car as they provide "snail" accommodation, a place to sleep in the vehicle. With foldaway barbeque and underseat refrigerator, they provide for most needs if you don't require luxurious accommodation. Ideal for a couple and so versatile with moving around New Zealand especially. On top of the Interislander by martin_nl To get from the North Island to the South Island and vice versa you can take either the Interislander or the Lynx. Interislander is the cheapest of the two and is only a little bit slower than the Lynx. Both ferries run between Picton on the South Island and Wellington, the NZ capital, on the North Island. Of the two I travelled on Interislander, simply because they were the cheapest option. The boat is very good and there is quite some entertainment on board. The cheapest and nicest entertainment however is to sit on the roof of the boat and simply enjoy the views of the Marlborough Sounds close to Picton. Apart from price the route is exactly the same, only the departure place in Wellington is somewhat different and the Interislander has more departures, so I think this would be the preferred choice. Book your ticket in advance via the website to get a discounted rate. On the day of departure you can only buy full priced tickets. Leave a Comment

Going places! by K.Knight I could recommend this as a cheap & easy way to see NZ for a group of 6 because.... All of your accomodation and transport hire costs are approx AUS$96.00 per day (AUS$32.00 per couple), You can buy all your own groceries and cook all your own meals, make a tea/coffee or cold drink any time, you can free camp anywhere you like at no cost, diesel fuel is only NZ59cents per litre and at the end of the day, after a big day of sightseeing, you do not have to drive back to your accomodation because you have it with you! Don't forget to consider travelling on the local bus company, that covers the whole country. Intercity is a scheduled regular bus company, not a tour company. Fine coaches and great routes, the most of any. If at all possible, book in advance and you are more likely to get a cut price ticket. These special prices are very reasonable. All in all, a great way to get around the country. Leave a Comment

This budget airline offers great rates and close proximity to New Zealanders who live south of Auckland, in the Waikato region. They also fly to other smaller towns, such as New Plymouth, Wellington and Dunedin. Of course the destination for these flights, is Australia. Freedom flies to Brisbane, Gold Coast, and Sydney. Peanuts and Cola flights, where you are welcome to take your own food. These flights are relatively short, around 4 hrs long, depending on where you leave from, so not having a meal is really no big deal. Leave a Comment

Qantas flying high. (c) Qantas by martin_nl Since I had a Qantas ticket and my flight to NZ was included I didn't have to worry about prices, however it might be worth checking out some airlines before buying a ticket. There are three major airlines that fly between OZ and NZ. Check out the following websites: -Qantas -Virgin Blue -Air New Zealand The prices shouldn't differ too much nowadays, because since the arrival of Virgin Blue a couple of years ago the traditional carriers Air New Zealand and Qantas have lowered their prices too. The cheapest deal can usually be had from Sydney and Melbourne with 129 AUD one way. Air NZ and Qantas still feed you but for Vrgin Blue you have to bring your own munchies or you have to buy them for a high price on board the aircraft. Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

Wellington Cable car by K.Knight A nice, inexpensive experience , that offered great views of the city at the top. At around $3.50 for the trip It is worth the time. A cafe is situated at the top of the Cable car which also happens to be at the top of the botanical gardens. Why not take the tram to the top, have a cuppa and walk back DOWN the hill via the gardens? The cable car runs every 10 minutes 7am until 10 pm weekdays and 9am until 10pm weekends. It is located in Cable Car Lane, just off Lambton Quay. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Magic Bus by wkcsmt The Magic Bus works well for backpackers and independent travellers - you're able to travel New Zealand at your own pace with someone to advise you when you need it. Furthurmore, the driver will give informative commentaries on New Zealand, the places you visit and the activities available in each region. You will be dropped off at the door of your hostel and picked up on your chosen departure date. You can get off the bus anywhere on route (not just the overnight stops) and be picked up when the next bus comes through so that you can spend an extra few days at your favourite places . The drivers also provide services such as your onward travel booking (on Magic), accommodation at selected hostels & many popular activities. There is a minimum of 4 coaches per week (more in summer). So, you can plan your trip from 2 weeks up to 12 months, or even plan each day as it comes! Magic Travellers Network covers places like the Scottish City of Dunedin in the South, the art deco City of Napier in Hawkes Bay, the beautiful Pacific Coast town of Mt Maunganui as well as Northland and the sunny Bay of Islands... You'll also make great friends on the bus!! It's just so wonderful especially if you're travelling alone. Choose from a mixture of passes available to suit your holiday...ENJOY!!! Mt. Taranaki by mfc10 You will most likely arrive to New Zealand by plane. Auckland is the main gateway for the arrival of international flights. It also happens to be the most vibrant city in the country - don't even think about leaving the country without visiting it. As you approach Auckland look through the window! The landscape in that area (Manukau) is a great appetizer! If you don't have too much time and need to travel between fairly distant major cities, let's say Christchurch and Auckland, buying a plane ticket may be a very good solution. Qantas and AirNewZealand are the most obvious options and the prices are perfectly reasonable. If traveling from the South Island to Auckland, sit on the left side of the plane. Weather allowing, you may have a great view of Mount Taranaki/Egmont, as some routes traverse that area! Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane
