Shuttle Services / Great Walks

by MichaelFalk1969

Some of the great walks (hikes) of New Zealand require a bit of pre-planning as they might be off the beaten path and difficult to reach by car or public transport, or hikes might not be roundtrips, so you don`t finish where you started (Tongariro Crossing, Heaphy Track). You should plan your transport ahead and in time; often the operators offer a pick-up from the accomodation. Other (coastal) hikes like the Queen Charlotte Walk or Abel Tasman National Park hikes require the use of "water-taxis" that drop you at a point of your choice, so you can tramp back to your starting point. These coastal trails can for the most part only be reached by boat. This is very convenient if you don`t intend to hike a specific hiking trail over the complete distance.

Interislander Ferry

by MichaelFalk1969

The Interislander Ferry was a time-efficient way to cross the Cook Street between North- and South Island of New Zealand (ca. 3 hours journey). Remember always to book ahead on the Internet as the ferry might be fully booked during holidays, especially at popular times. It is advisable to show up an hour before departure as you have to check in your heavy luggage. Many car rental companies do not allow you to take your rental car from the North to the South by ferry, so usually you must return your car to the rental car station at the departure ferry terminal and get a new one at the arrival terminal. The ferry crossing in fine weather is a great opportunity for photographers as you have exciting views on Wellington Harbour and the Marlborough Sounds during your journey.

Air New Zealand

by MichaelFalk1969

After a troubling 27-hour flight to New Zealand with other airlines, the flight back with Air New Zealand was just great. By far the best airline I ever flew with, friendly staff, great entertainment options, delicious food. The only thing you have to keep in mind is that they take luggage restrictions very seriously, so no more than 20 kg for your luggage and max. 7 kg for hand luggage (they actually do weigh your backpack!). I recommend Air New Zealand highly.

THE New Zealand Hop-on Hop-off Backpacking Bus

by Gypsygirl05

If you're a backpacker looking for a cheap way to get around, see everything, and meet new people who are doing the same thing you are, the bus systems are a great way to get around. There are various companies to check out. I chose to use Kiwi Experience's Bottom Bus route and I was extremely pleased with the service. The drivers were all Kiwis who knew a ton about their country, and we stopped at all sorts of interesting places that were off the beaten track. They'll book your hostel for you, and even offer advice (or book tours) as to what there is to do in a given city. It's relatively cheap, and the best part about it is that you can both choose your route and choose how long you stay at each destination. Buses start the route every other day or so (it depends on the route). Most of the "buses" were actually more like large vans, and during my trip there were only about ten other...

Milford Sound for younger (18-30s) travelers

by Gypsygirl05

Kiwi Experience is a great bus company if you are looking for a trip with other younger travelers. There is often time to make stops at key highlights along the route (we saw a couple of the massive glacier-formed valleys and stopped at the magnificent Chasm on the Claddau River) before boarding the boat that travels around the sound. Most of the patrons are in the 18-30 range, many of them backpackers, and the atmosphere is great as a result. The guide was knowledgeable and hilarious, and he made the trip very entertaining. Other notes: --If you are looking to hike along the trail that leads to Milford, this company will do transports and drop you off at your desired starting location.--This trip is included in the Bottom Bus loop that Kiwi Experience offers. I also highly recommend that!--The only downfall to using a bus system is that you have no control over the timing of your visit...

Not Only Air New Zealand for Domestic Flights

by Kakapo2

/(Complete update November 2009, due to several changes)(Another update December 2010 after an alliance between Air New Zealand and Pacific Blue has been approved by NZ's Transport Minister Steven Joyce)We do not only have Air New Zealand for domestic flights. Also Jetstar (which has replaced mother company Qantas mid 2009) and Pacific Blue (since November 2007) provide domestic flights which can be cheaper on a case to case basis. Unfortunately New Zealand's Transport Minister Steven Joyce has approved an alliance of Air New Zealand and Pacific Blue on trans-Tasman routes - which has led to the exit of Pacific Blue on the domestic market. Pacific Blue which only serviced the major routes between the big centres Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch had had promotions from as cheap as NZ$ 39. I often fly to Wellington just for the day because the fares are so low. (Do not remind me of...

Alpha Campervans

by Loops

We picked up and dropped off at their branch near Auckland Airport and they provide a shuttle service to/from their depot. They were great, no problems at all with the camper. Everything we expected was provided and we were warm enough despite it being winter. The camper was really easy to drive too and not slow and doddery (like cars pulling caravans can be!).One thing that we'd consider next time would be to rent a 6 berth van - there were 4 of us but our kids are teenagers and they found the over-head bed to be a bit too cramped for two, so that's worth bearing in mind if anyone's considering renting a 4 berth van with teens or 4 adults (I'm sure it would be fine for smaller kids or for just one person sleeping up there). I couldn't get up there either - it was too cramped for me, so I was glad I wasn't supposed to be sleeping up there (I would have ended up sleeping on the floor...

By boat! I came and left with...

by ATLC

By boat! I came and left with the same one: The Australis. This brochure picture was pasted into my album by my mother.Built by Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock Company, Newport News, Virginia, USA, 1940. 34,449 gross tons; 723 feet long; 93 feet wide. Steam turbines, twin screw. Service speed 20 knots. 2,258 maximum passengers. We left with this boat from Southampton via Canary Islands - Cape Town, South Africa - Australia (Perthe, Melbourne & Sydney), arriving in Auckland, NZ 5/6 weeks after departure.Four years later we left from Auckland via Tahiti - Balboa - Panama Canal - Curaçao - Florida (Miami, Everglades) to UK (can't remember where) and arriving in Amsterdam 6 weeks after departure. There is a hugely interesting website about this ship's history from its building in 1939 to its demise on the coast of Fuerteventura in 1993.

Kiwi car hire in New Zealand

by margaretmcguffin

If you are looking for reasonably-priced car hire, I can recommend Kiwi Car Hire. We have used them on two separate trips - one from Auckland to Christchurch and another beginning in Christchurch and travelling to Blenheim/Marlborough, the Catlins, Otago and Invercargill. Both trips entailed about 3500km each. These cars are not new but are very reliable and very cheap. In Auckland a bus takes you to the off-airport depot to pick up your car,and then on return someone will drive you or provide a shuttle to the airport. In Christchurch we made a phone call and the car was delivered to the airport. On return we were told to put the keys under the seat, lock the car and leave it in the short-term carpark. Christchurch is the only city in the world where the man who delivered the car told me that as long as we brought it back with four corners, we'd be right.
