Bus service in Whangarei

by misoluva

Citylink is the local bus service for Whangarei. Its bright green, so you can't miss it and travels between Kamo, Otangarei, Tikipunga, the city, Maunu, Otaika, Raumanga and Onerahi. Its comfortable, air conditioned and can kneel as well e.g for Wheelchairs, prams etc.The good thing is that a voice guide tells you which is the next stop. So pretty good if you are visually impaired. And the bus drivers are helpful too. Also when your standing at the bus stop, put your hand out to signal the driver to stop.Bus fares range between $1 - $4, depending on where your travelling to or whether your changing buses.

Getting around using public transport to Northland

by misoluva

There a few bus companies that run through Northland. If you travel on the Nakedbus(and no - no one is naked on this journey, its just a name of a business). It leaves from Auckland and stops in most towns along the way - final destination - Kerikeri. The first time i used this bus, it broke down 5 times along the way to our destination Paihia. What should have only been 1.10 hour journey, took us 5 HOURS to get there. But don't let that put you off using this service, I still use it :-D. Plus if you book early sometimes you can get really cheap deals from $1.Another bus company that is good to travel with is Intercity, departing everyday from Auckland to Kaitaia. The bus driver will usually do a rest stop for half hour at either Kaiwaka, Brynderwyn or Paihia. So gives you time to stretch your legs or have lunch etc. You can also get discounts for students/golden age(old...

List of Car Rental Companies with Good Rates

by Kakapo2

---------For many years I had only had rental cars from two companies in New Zealand because I was so happy with them that I did not see any need to try others. Those two companies are:Ace Car Rentals (www.acerentalcars.co.nz) for both islands and Affordable Cars in Christchurch (www.affordablecars.co.nz) for the South Island. They are reliable and have great rates.See more info about them on my NZ and Christchurch pages.Of course, we have Hertz, Budget, Avis and Thrifty here as well but the rates are well above those of other companies. On a trip to Wellington I made very good experience with Pegasus Rentals. Here a list of companies with lower rates:www.rentadent.co.nzwww.bargainrentals.co.nzwww.atob-rental-car.co.nzwww.mcdonaldsrentacar.co.nzwww.qualityrental.co.nzwww.nzrentalcar.co.nzUpdate Sept. 2008/Feb. 2010The fastest growing budget rental companies in NZ are Jucy and Escape...

Ace Rental Cars

by Kakapo2

When I travelled to NZ the first time in 1991 Ace Cars were only in Auckland, and the cars were really old, and once we even had a breakdown with it on the South Island - but first Ace Cars managed everything from far away, and second this breakdown made us know the friendly way of the Kiwis much better... ;-)Today the company has expanded with branches in Auckland City and at the Airport, Wellington, Picton, Christchurch and Queenstown, and agencies in Kaikoura, Greymouth and Dunedin, and the old cars are much newer, even rather new. Of course, I do not need rental cars very often now, as I live in NZ in the meantime, but whenever I go to Auckland without car and I need one, I go to Ace Cars which is - like other vehical rentals - at a very handy location in Parnell, at the bottom of the hill, at walking distance to the central city. And every time I am well served, and the rates are...

Campervanning around New Zealand

by balhannah

Hi! We travelled around NZ for 6 weeks in a Motorhome and had a great time. They were very expensive, but I happened to find a company that was a lot cheaper, don't know if they still are, as we went in 2005.The difference was, the Campervans were a couple of years old and not brand new. We didn't have any problems with this, they were in good shape internally and exernally.Even though there was only two of us, we chose the 4 berth and were very glad we did. There is not much storage space for large cases, so we put them up on the double bed area, and slept in the lounge area, I, myself found this much easier because of going to the toilet at night. It had a shower and toilet which we used, not all the time, as we stayed in parks quite a bit. One advantage was, the heating was run on gas, so in April when it was cold we had heating, and others when they bush camped didn't, because they...

Moverse por NZ - Moving in NZ

by elpariente

La verdad es que en este momento no soy capaz de tomar una decisión , asi que lo dejaré para pensarlo cuando pueda volver a NZWhen we were planning our trip we raised the question of how we should move on our journey. We had never ridden...

Three Very Scenic Train Trips

by Kakapo2

Auckland and Wellington have some suburban railway services, and we have some "fun" trains (see separate tip), but the NZ way to travel is definitely not by train. There are only three major railway lines that are still in use, and mostly for domestic and international tourist purposes. The Overlander does not operate daily in winter.TranzAlpine: Christchurch - GreymouthThe journey through farmland, gorges, river valleys and the Southern Alps is 223.8km long and takes four and half hours. You pass 16 tunnels and five viaducts. The train carries an open air viewing carriage and a buffet carriage. In Greymouth it connects with coach/bus services to Hokitika, Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers, Westport and Nelson, and you can hire a car. There are also return day excursions available, this costs NZ$195.http://www.railnewzealand.com/Tranzalpine.html TranzCoastal: Christchurch - PictonYou can...

Cook Strait Ferries with big price differences

by Kakapo2

You might think if two ferry companies that operate on the same route between the North and the South Island - a 92km journey between Picton and Wellington - should have similar fares. But this does not always apply. So always try to book well in advance and compare the prices. The two operating companies are the old-established Interislander (which BTW is very often in the news for problems with the ferries, regulations or travels in dangerous conditions, be it with the Aretere or the Arahura) and its latest competitor Bluebridge. The Lynx, a fast ferry service, which is mentioned in many travel guides, does not exist anymore. In good weather conditions the journey takes 3 hours. If the weather is bad they show the pale travellers on TV a little later... ;-) I think the "record" of travel time was at about 11 hours...I have made price checks several times, and sometimes you paid NZ$100...

Travel Distances: Driving in NZ Takes Time

by Kakapo2

As generally we do not have multi-lane roads in New Zealand, just around the big centres, and sometimes short stretches of passing lanes, you will not get really far in a day. Addiotionally many roads are narrow, winding or steep, and sometimes you get stuck right there behind a milk tanker... ;-) Distances are longer than they seem on the map, so if you calculate your itinery do not count with more than 80 kilometres per hour, as the speed limit on open roads is 100kph (50kph in towns), and you will have to stop for petrol, refreshment breaks and, of course, taking photos. To give you an idea, here some travel distances and times:Auckland - Paihia (Bay of Islands) 240km/4 hrsAuckland - Rotorua 235km/3.5 hrsAuckland - Wellington 660km/9 to 9.5 hrsAuckland - Napier 420km/6 hrsRotorua - Wellington 460km/6.5 hrsChristchurch - Lake Tekapo 225km/3 to 3.5 hrsChristchurch - Mt. Cook 330km/5...
