McDonalds Rent a Car, excellent service

by vtveen

During our visits to New Zealand we always travelled by rental car and did have cars from Budget and Avis. Last visit we had a rental car (due to a tip from VT member ‘kiwi’) from McDonalds Rent a Car. This is a smaller family owned company with offices in Auckland, Rotorua, Wellington, Picton and Christchurch. They are not the cheapest in this business, but a lot less expensive than the ‘big’ companies. We were very satisfied about the services and the car we got, an almost new Toyota Corolla. McDonalds doesn’t have depots on the airports, but they make an appointment to deliver the car. We used the city office in Auckland to pick up and drop off our car and they were open specially for us during public holidays around Christmas !!(within New Zealand they do have a free phone number: 0800 164 165)

McDonalds Rental Cars

by kiwi

We prefer to use this company, having done so for many years. It is a family run business which began from a small fleet to the size it is today, situated in both islands.Although not one of the big Names in rental cars, we have no problem recommending McDonalds. Their cars are never more than 2 yrs old, always in very good condition, and the price rates are always very good. Not situated at the International Airport, they will make arrangements to meet you, so that is not a problem.Within NZ the toll free number is: 0800 164 165April 2008 - I used this company again and still highly recommend them. Such personal service and totally willing to please.Head Office: 222 Main South Road, Sockburn, Christchurch, New Zealand

Getting here

by fishandchips

Being a long way from anywhere, the most common way you'll get here is by airplane with the occasional Cruise ships now and again. Our national airline is Air New Zealand and it is ranked fairly high on safety and service. Air NZ is not the cheapest by any stretch of the imagination with a number of Asian airlines (Singapore, Cathay) and Emrites being more cost effective esp for trips out of NZ.

Flying around NZ

by fishandchips

For many years flying domestically was very expensive. This is no longer the case with Air New Zealand, our national airline, having competition from both Qantas and Pacific Blue. Flights from Christchurch to Auckland can be as cheap as $79 for a standard fare with special getting the flights even lower. Air NZ have a grabaseat site which includes daily specials on airfares. This is okay if the dates suit however this is often not the case. Have a look at grabaseat or Pacific Blue for potential options on cheap seats.

RENTING A CAR IN NZ

by AusPinay

Going around Christchurch and driving from there to Queenstown was a piece of cake! The roads are safe (mostly), have enough signs so we didn't really get lost much. We made sure we are rested and drove carefully of course. The rental car company gave us chains for use in case of heavy snows but we didn't really needed them. We were fine even climbing the snowy mountains- Mt. Hutt, Coronet Peak, etc. The views are breathtaking so we drove on a leisurely pace -that's the beauty of not joining bus tours/tour groups! We also made overnight or two stop-overs midway to Queenstown. Our final stop was Queenstown but starting at Christchurch was a superb plan! The sights we saw, the beauty around the South Island indeed make this land a favourite tourist haven!Go see the South Island, it will be memorable! One top tip: Don't miss Lake Tekapo going to Queenstown and beyond the far south (I have a...

Air travel in NZ

by travelteacher

Be prepared for short flights. There are 2 domestic carriers: Air New Zealand and Qantas. Air NZ operates all over both islands while service with Qantas is fairly limited. Also, be prepared for PROP planes to the smaller airports. Call the airlines or check their websites regarding baggage restrictions (see warnings). There are also some good deals to be found on their websites.

Cheap Bus Travel in New Zealand

by karenx69

Travelling to New Zealand? The best way to get around NZ is by long-distance bus. There are only about 4 railway routes in NZ so travelling by rail is not an option. Hiring a car or campervan is a popular option but expensive, and not necessary - there are frequent bus services to all destinations and all the accommodation and activity providers will come and pick you up and drop you off. Plus travelling by bus you get to look out the window and sight-see instead of having to keep your eyes on the road and you get the chance to meet new people. Did I mention it is very cheap?Nakedbus.com have a variable price structure - the cheapest fares are only $1 (plus booking fee). Once all the $1 fares are filled then the price increases to the next level and once those are filled the price increases to the next level. So if you book early enough you can get an amazing bargin. The easy to use...

nakedbus.com - the cheapest bus service (online)

by Kakapo2

This is a rather new service and prides itself of being New Zealand's lowest cost city to city bus network. The service started in 2006 on the North Island, and in early 2007 it started operating on several South Island routes. You must make your booking online, bookings by telephone are not possible (yet), and if you are lucky a seat, for example, from Christchurch to Queenstown costs you only NZ$1. At least 10% of all seats cost only $1.I have just made a test. For tomorrow the trip would cost me $33, but on the day after tomorrow only $1 - plus $0.70 booking fee, and the day after that $33 again. Sure, the earlier you book the higher the chance to get a low fare. But still the higher fares are very competitive. You can take up to two medium sized suitcases with you, and one piece of handluggage on board. Excess baggage and gear like surfboards and bicycles cost extra )$10 to 15) but are...

Be Aware of Speed Cameras Even in Remote Areas

by Kakapo2

If you do not have a radar detector it is rather unwise to speed even in the most remote and unpopulated areas. Traffic officers are patrolling the highways in marked and unmarked cars and nearly always have the speed measuring instruments and cameras turned on. They check the speed both ways, so they can catch you whether you are travelling in the same direction or in oncoming traffic. They often turn around, so you never know how far they are.Lately we have had letters in the newspapers with drivers accusing police that they only make speed controls outside the cities where it does not matter if you drive 100 or 110km/h but where it is easy and a fast way to issue tickets, and not in the densely populated cities where 10km/h can make a big difference. Police are also accused of rewarding offers who issue a lot of tickets. Of course, they deny it. And I do not know if it is true or not....
