    Our car at the lodge

There are two schools of thought about Norfolk - (a) you don't need a car; (b) you do need a car. I subscribe to the latter.
Though the island is only 8 kilometres by about four, you'll miss out on a lot if you don't have a vehicle. There's many a lookout at the end of a dead end street, there's interesting places that you'll have no access to if you don't have one.
Mind you, the islanders know that too which is why there's a lot of hire car companies for such a small island!
Ours came as part of a package and was waiting for us when we arrived at our accommodation and we were able to leave it at the airport without checking it back out again.
In fact, when you're on Norfolk, no-one bothers to lock their car. The easiest job on the island is being a policeman.

  • The planes look like this - Norfolk Island
    The planes look like this

If you have decided to go then it's 99% plus sure that you will be going by plane. A lot of times you will be sharing that plane with a lot of old farts like myself. In fact, on the entire plane there was only one couple under 50 when we went. You have been warned.
With the introduction of a service from Newcastle you can now go from there or Brisbane, Sydney or Auckland.
You can expect to pay between $600 to $850 unless, like me, you get a special deal and you get accommodation, car hire, museum passes and a couple of meals thrown in all for around $1,000. Bargain.
The planes are medium haul jets run by a couple of different companies and it takes just over two and a half hours from Australia to get there, shorter from N.Z.

  • Is Please GIVE WAY TO THE COWS, and other non-motorised users of the road (includes little children, ducks, geese etc). Speed limit is 50klms and 30klm on the roads bordering the school during school hours.

There are heavy penalties (financial) for hitting a cow or a calf, but stray and feral chickens are ok.

    One and Only Taxi
    Astrawan
  • By Astrawan on May 10, 2007
  • Norfolk Island Page by Astrawan
  • Please note there is only ONE taxi on the whole island - at the moment you can call the taxi for free from any public or local phone on the island (all local phonecalls on the island are currently free - might change shoon).

However, your accommodation normally comes with a hire car included, if not, you may hire a car for AUD$25 per day, and if you are staying with friends/relatives, I am sure they will have no hesitation in running you around or having you borrow their car.

Remember, the island is only 5 by 8klms, so when in need feel free to stick your thumb out and any local who comes by will take you whereever you need to go.

I never had the opportunity to travel to a seperated island. This island is really seperated. You can't find anything around this island. Somethimes (if the weather not good enough) airplanes don't land on the island because to dangerous is. I saw one time this. One of the airplane didn't land because the fog.

When I was there we had only one company fly to this Island. I think in this time you have more opportunity to choose between more companies. That mean the ticket is more cheaper. When we had to buy it,that was more than 700$ AUD.
