Saipan is a terrritory of the U.S. Since I spent the last year in Seoul, Korea, I thought it would be great to step foot on American soil again. Saipan is American soil by name only. Immediately after disembarking the plane, I felt like I was in Tokyo. Ko Ni Chi Wa, Kon Bang Wa, Irai Sai Ma Sen. I got these horrible high school Japanese class flashbacks. If you look Asian, be prepared to be bombarded constantly with earfuls of Japanese. |

Husking coconut at my grandmother's house in As Teo, Saipan. My uncle had sliced off the outer covering of the coconut with a machete to make it easier to husk since the inside was a task itself if you aren't used to it. Some locals have tons of mangoes and coconuts around. If you drive by anywhere and catch some fruit with your eye, just politely ask and I'm sure they wouldn't mind if you had any at all. We get visitors at my grandmother's all the time, wanting to take some of the many mangoes falling on the ground (she has a lot of trees!). To try a taste of some local food and pastries, Escos Bakery located on Capitol Hill is the best way to experience that. |
