During WWII, Tinian was a very strategic location. In 1943, the airfield runways were the busiest in the world. The U.S.S. Indianapolis dropped off a top-secret cargo and then if you've ever watched the movie Jaws, you know what happened to the U.S.S. Indianapolis after it left Tinian. The Anola Gay then departed for Hiroshima from Tinian.
Today, there is a memorial on the site of the bomb pits. A very emotional place.
