Rock Island Cafe: Best restaurant in downtown

by DSwede Updated Mar 13, 2010

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Rock Island Cafe is an economic family style restaurant. The menu is fairly extensive, the portions are large and the costs are very reasonable. We went there several times and never had a bad meal.

If I remember correctly, the restaurant is closed Friday sunset to Saturday sunset (owner is Seventh-Day Adventist)

It was probably the best restaurant we visited in the downtown area.

Favorite Dish: Unlike most of the other restaurants that are Japanese or other Asian food, Rock Island is an American style cafe.

The burgers, steaks, sandwiches, pizzas, etc were all great!!

Anywhere they dine: Ask a Palaun

by dovalyn Updated Oct 23, 2007

The local street vendor down the street from our hotel was a good place to eat. They offered more of the American fare consisting of a hamburger and soft drinks. Ask a Palaun and they will give you directions to a good eatery or just follow the families. Sometimes, they may even invite you to their place for lunch or dinner. I wouldn't be surprised by the friendliness of the island people.
About a block from our hotel was a grocery store and across the way from them was a small mom and pop market with homemade paluan foods to go consisting of fresh fish, dried fish, seaweed salads, taro, turtle soup, yes turtle soup and lots of fresh fruits.
If you don't feel like venturing outside, breakfast at our local hotel was wonderful. It's buffet style for one price was an excellent choice. Dim Sum, oatmeal, cereals as well as bacon, eggs and potatoes to choose from. More vegetables and fruits than you could ask for and all very fresh.

Favorite Dish: At the mom and pop eatery, I favored the dried fish which was a flounder looking whitefish measuring 1'x1'. Pretty large by American standards and smoked fresh that morning. They sell out very quickly and by the afternoon, they've all been sold. It's a hearty fish when washed down with an ice cold beer, thus making it my all time favorite.

Kramers: Go to Kramers Cafe !

by matlocksson Updated Apr 14, 2004

This is an excellent restaurant overlooking the ocean. Its a great place to hang out, have a beer or eat diner. The sashimi here is excellent as well as the daily specials that include a variety of cuisines such as thai, german and mexican. For less than ten dollars the special consists of the soup of the day and large portions. The owner, Rene, and the staff are friendly and welcoming. Great place to play darts too! Definiately a place that tourist and locals visit often.

Favorite Dish: The blue cheese burger is excellent as well as the tostada salad with fish or chicken. You can't go wrong with the chicken wings made with Rene's special home made hammerhead hot sauce . All the fish dishes are wonderful especially the Hawaian Poke, the blackened sashimi and the bannana leaf wrapped fish.

Indian Cuisine: Eat at the Taj

by matlocksson Written Mar 30, 2004

This is an excellent Indian restaurant with a wide selection of dishes to sample. On thursdays, there is an all you can eat lunch buffet for $ 10.00. The owner, Robert, is very personable and a good host. The decor is amazing with an open window to the kitchen so you can watch the chef and a huge painting of dancing Indian girls. Definately a great place to eat !

Favorite Dish: Everything I have tried is good here but my favorites are the butter chicken, shajahani murg and chicken curry.
