This is the company I did all my diving and kayaking with. I found them to be quite professional and really easy to get along with. My girlfriend did her open water dive course here and I was able to tag along. Snorkel when they were doing their skills and joined in on the fun dives. I also dove Blue Corner, Iwo Wreck, German Channel, Jelly Fish Lake and Big Drop Off with them. When I went on the kayak trip the guide was really knowledgable and helped to make it a great trip. They offer many activites and there equipment is in good shape. I will for sure use them again in future trips out to Palau.

  • that connects Koror to the main island is probably the only public place around Koror that offers decent snorkelling, I've seen plenty of lion fishes there in just 3 feet of water. Beware of strong current though - check with locals before going in and stay close to the shore.

    Kayak Thru the Islands

  • Kayaking in Palau is amazing. No rough-riding here. Just the gentle waves of the ocean and the slight pull of the tides. In waters as clear as glass, this is definately an unforgetable experience.

We booked our trip through Sam's Dive Shop. We decided on the day trip but you may want to look into an overnight excursion. Sam's has sole rights to certain islands where their tourists can camp on a secluded beach of a small uninhabited island. Their employees will bring food and cook it for you, sometimes even using local food from that island.

We stopped at several different places as we wound our way from outlaying rock to rock. One had a huge bat cave, another an ideal diving spot fifty feet high, even a lake full of jellyfish that you could swim with.

The best though was somewhere called Disney cove. It is a cove on the interior of a small island. You can only get to it when the tide is low, that is when the water level reveals an opening at the side of the island. In your kayak you need to lean way back and "walk" yourself through the cave using your hands on the ceiling. About 20-30 feet later it will open into a beautiful private cove about 60 feet across with a white beach and thick green jungle.

We stopped there for lunch and a little bit of snokeling. A family of tiger sharks likes to make their home on the underside of the cave if you are feeling adventorous.

All gear can be bought or rented at Sam's Dive Shop. It is probably best to rent the majority of your equipment just to make your traveling a bit easier, especially if you are going through international airports.

  • I did not do a liveaboard from Palau, but I did all my dives as single day trips (one week in total). The waters around Palau were very calm and only had 2~3ft swells at maximum when I was visiting. If you are on a larger boat, 3 ft swells are barely noticeable.

However, if you are on a liveaboard, you will most definitely go farther into the deep blue and waves could be much larger. Other liveaboards I've done in the area were similar (2~3ft near the islands) and ~6ft in the open waters.

Dive trips take a long time

  • It usually takes around 2 hours on a speed boat to get to the most popular dive spots and 2 hours to get back. This 2-hour ride thru the Rock Islands is really spectacular but it can be quite bumpy if sea is a bit chopy, especialy on the return trip (wind is usualy blowing west). Bumpy also means wet, so get ready for it - take extra t-shirt, perhaps a towel, take a dry sack to keep your things dry.

Speeding to dive spots on a speed boat equiped with 400 Yamaha's horses sure is fun and it feels quite refreshing because of the "wind" and splashing water, so you could be tricked to believe sun isn't a problem - don't forget to put A LOT of sun cream on yourself.

    Swim with Sting Rays
  • By JenNJohn on July 9, 2003

  • Scuba diving in Palau is among the best in the world.

One of the most unique places to go is a sting ray cleaning station. Again we joined Sam's Dive Shop for this tour. The dive started with a quick ride on a boat to the location.

When you get down you can wait for a little bit and sting rays measuring 12 feet across begin to come. It looks almost like an underwater ballet. A group of about 10 sting rays came while we were down. And we also saw some sea turtles and an octopus. It's one of the only places in the world that sting rays consistantly return to.

The dive shop even video tapes the experience if you would like to take a unique souvenier home with you. Maybe a little overpriced for the quality, but when will you ever get that opportunity again.

Best to rent from the dive shop.
